KelTec P-40 Any Good & What's It Worth?

A friend of mine is selling a KelTec P-40 and had offered it to me at a seemingly good price. The gun is several years old shot often and in good condition. Could use a small auto for carry in the summer to justify the purchase but want some opinions & feedback first. Is the P-40 a reliable weapon and what is the fair price range for a used one in good condition? Thanks.

Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.

Kel-Tecs are great little guns. I must say, that being such a light little gun, the P-40 packs a heck of a recoil. I was shooting CCI Blaser ammo thru a buddies, and couldn't even finish off the magazine it was so unpleasent to shoot. I shoot a .40 Glock 22, and also Colt Govt. .45acp, and even with hot +P loads, they don't have anything on the little Kel-Tec.

Blue book on the P-40 is follows:

    MSRP $331, 100%=$275, 98%=$225, 95%=$190, 90%=$175, 80%=$160

    Add $41 for parkerized finish
Add $58 for hard chrome finish

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

Please don't let this "ruin your whole day", as this is only about one specimen--but a fellow where I currently work carries one and was called upon to qualify with it a couple of weeks ago. He was using professionally reloaded ammunition (not mine!) that had a FMJ bullet with a tapered profile and a little bit of a blunt nose. The pistol would not fire a magazine without jamming at least twice; and the range officer, while permitting alibis for the jams, made him refire the course seven times before he qualified--as he became increasingly flustered by the performance of his pistol and correspondingly less accurate. If anything, the pistol's performance seemed to worsen as it got dirty. I examined the gun and the feed ramp had already been polished, which the owner admitted was due to previous problems; he claimed that it is reliable with round nose ammo. However, he's now looking for a new gun. I notice that the .40 version of the Kel-Tech no longer appears in any of my current catalogs.

I had simular problems with my P40, but has not jammed since I sent it back to have it polished. As far as monetary value, scanning the auctions, it does appear that the P40 has increased in value since Kel Tec stopped making it.

I purchased a barely shot one for around $275. It broke in after about three mags and is my daily carry item now. What has been said about the recoil is true; especially combined with the long trigger pull. Once you get use to it though it is not a problem, at least for me. The P40 is reasonable accurate , light , and reliable. Ishoot 165 gr Corbon through mine. the Kel tec web site explaines that they pulled production because of multiple returns that turned out to be due to limp wristing and recoil management issues. i love mine and am sorry they stopped making 'em. I would get another one; but I reccomend you shoot one first rto see if it works for you.

My son has one for his carry gun and gets along pretty good with it. It took a few mags full to get it to where you were sure it would cycle. He can hit pretty well with the miserable trigger pulling little beast. I think it would get me over flinching because by the time you pull it through you don,t think it will ever fire. He also has a Taurus 45 DAO and to me it has a much nicer trigger. I don't think I can ever get used to DAO. I also have big hands and didn't notice the recoil to bad on the p-40.

yes the recoil is a little sharp , but managable....have sold several
in available calibers , always reccommend them highly................
if you do buy it and dont like it , let us know , we will try and buy it.....Good Luck...............................................

The first handgun I purchased was a Kel-Tec P40.It was reliable for such a low price. It fed everything I put in it and I would load 135 155 and 180 grain bullets from blunt nose CCI's to +p hollowpoints and never had a jam.The only thing I didnt like about it was the accuracy but for the intended purpose it was adequate it just took some adjusting too.But it has been very reliable. They are great for carry and I didnt find the recoil bad at all i actually fired 250 rounds the first time at the range with it as it was recomended as a break in.My hand was a little sore the next day but I was shooting a .357magnum too.I paid $200.00 for mine and dont regret a penny.Anywhere within Id say $200.00 and down should be a good price.Kel-Tec also sells drop in .357SIG barrels for $150.00 and if you will be carrying dont forget the pocket clip. Also dont forget S&W 4006 mags work great in them and you get 2 more rounds.Good gun good price.Good Luck

I recall there being a Kel-Tec online owners group. They seemed to have some pretty good information last time I checked.

    You might check them out.
