M-16

I spent a year in the Mekong Delta carrying an M-16 most of that time, except briefly an M-79. The flash suppressor was tapered to the end and had slots cut in it all the way to the end, which made it excellent for opening cases of C rations. As memory serves me, the serial number was 186733. I was issued this weapon 4/68, and I think other guys started getting the square ended flash suppressor models a few months later.
I embarrassed to tell you, that's all I know about this weapon, except what it felt like to carry it for 12 months.
The thing is, I'm thinking of trying to get a gun as near like this as possible, but just get real confused reading the ads. Are there any weapons out there which are exact replicas as opposed to something which looks somewhat like it? I understand the full auto feature isn't available, and don't care about that at all.
I picked up a weapon similar to this in a store yesterday, and the balance and weight just felt completely wrong, although I guess I could have forgotten in 33 years what it felt like.
I'd appreciate any information anyone might have about this.
Thanks a bunch,

You might look into getting a Colt Preban SP-1.
If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

that to my way of thinking defeat the idea of a light weight combat carbine. However, there are also military weight barrels out there.
For an education, look up the Bushmaster website. If you have to have the flash hider and if it's legal in your state, you can buy preban ARs second hand. Once you have a preban lower housing, you can buy all the other parts.
Later modifications such as round, ribbed handguards, forward assist, fully adjustable rear sights, and shorter/heavier barrel would make these rifles seem quite different from what you remember.

you would achive your goal with a sp-1 as the other guys have mentioned , if you have at least $1000 dollars or more . too much for me . i think if you researched a little you'd find a replica gun simalar but look for a pencil contour barrel with a simalar muzzle break . it would be post ban but very shootable . i think bushmaster is coming out or has a pencil barrel available . i think you would be happy with a bushy ,there great guns .

what caught my attention is the fact that you stated , the gun did not feel the same as your issue weapon .i am not a vet although my father in law is .the reason the gun in the store felt wierd is it had a heavy barrel as most (ar15 or m16 clones) guns do these days .

I don't agree, most AR's don't have heavy barrels, but they are avaiable. I think the reason the gun felt different is solely because it didn't have the triangular A1 handguards and funiture. Though the gun certainly could have been a heavy barreled model, and could have made a difference in the gun's feel.
