Scoping a Winchester 75 Target Model Rifle

Need some help from the experts. I have a Winchester 75 Target Model made in the late 50's that I would like to mount with a scope. Question: What would be a good-fit for this rifle that is in mint condition? Thanks.

    has it been previously scoped?
If so, what kind of mounts, and where are holes?

    Kimi,
G&G asked a very good question. I also have one in mint condition
that came w/Redfield sights. I do not know much about the 75 Target except they are priced quite low in comparison. They were also manufactured with a grooved receiver for easy scope mounting. I have seen Unertl blocks, etc., on this gun. Have no idea when mine was made but it is not grooved. Shoots extremely accurately, but then I have never seen a .22 not shoot well. Anyone have dates of manufacture? Best and thanks, 101

If it has not been drilled and tapped already, leave it alone. All you will do is wreck it's value.

Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    Hello folks,
I just got back on line. Thanks for the comments/advice, it is much appreciated. My 75 shows no signs of use whatsoever, so I do not believe it has ever had a scope mounted to it. It has the grooved receiver and the factory drilled and tapped barrel. I just like old scoped Winchester .22's, and thought I might dress this one up with some type of real nice scope and mounts/bases that would fit a .22, and the late 50's time period. What types might you all recommend? Again, many thanks to each of you for your response.

    kimi,
Burris makes an excellent set of 1", 22 rings for dovetailed receivers. There will be no holes needed for them. I use them on my grooved receiver 22's and have had good luck with them. If installed carefully, you shouldn't be able to tell to much if it was ever mounted. Use some gun grease when you install them, then wipe out the excess.

101: I have a book that shows dates of manufacture, so if you want to note your serial number range I'll check it out for you.

Tailgunner: My 75 has the Redfield sights, too. The color case on the sight base is really nice.

    kimi,
Thanks. Number is 74734. I am not afraid of full serial No/s.
A very fine arm but not valuable worth probably about $ 375.00
Has the extra one shot mag. Thank you in advance. Steve aka 101

    Hello Steve,
The Winchester handbook shows your rifle to have been made in 1950.

If you do not have this reference book by Madis, it is an exceptionally good one to consider buying. It has facts that Madis' bigger book, The Winchester Book, does not have. For example, it shows one Model 57 as being factory scoped...and it was side mounted! With a Lyman Junior Scope...made 1935, only. Excellent book.

Do you have any idea what type scope would add to the appeal of my 75 rifle that might fit its vintage as well as match its name in accuracy? I have one suggestion that regards a Burris scope.

101: Correction; Use of Burris scope rings and the grooved receiver vice Burris scope.

Some Target 75's in mint condition are selling at a grand. Those in 98% are between 650 and 750. Just like the Model 24 shotguns: Some 98% 12 gauges hovering at a grand...with the 20 gauges going well in excess of that.

    kimi,
Thank you for the information. Sorry for jumping on your post. I doubt, really that the Winchester M-75 Target will ever bring any real dollars. I have had this M-75 for thirty years. I am not a Winchester person except for the two pre 64 Model 70's that I bought
new and under age. They are not collectable after being hunted for nearly forty years. Darn best reliable rifles ever owned. I do have the Madis Book but never thought about looking up the 75. Just did not care. Thank you. Steve
