Is it possible to remove the fixed 10 round mag from a Yugo SKS and replace it to use detachable mags?

You would need to remove the bayo&lug and or the grenade launcher to maintain legality. Outside of the legality issues, yes you can. Do a GB search for "evil features" and you'll get plenty of info

its is easy to remove it
    1. empty the rifle and make sure it is unloaded and turn the safety off
    2. take a punch and push on the small button just behind the trigger guard until it pops free-u might have to push kinda hard
    3. pull the trigger guard and assembly downwards and away from the stock-the reciever should also be able to come free at this time.
    4. swing the mag out of the stock
    5. put trigger guard and and assembly back as u took it off but without the mag
    6. push reciver and trigger guard assembly back together-might have to push hard until the button pops back into place.

**** in opinion i have never had any luck with the detachable mags. i just use the 10 round fixed-it works fine for me and keeps me from using to much ammo.

Yep, You can do it. But as mentioned, some have hit or miss luck in changing a detachable mag (sks's in gen'l). For the most part, it may be just practice with that gun, and getting the 'duck bill' to catch and stay while you swing the rear up to the mag catch.

You may have to remove a little stock material in some cases.
Some mags may need a little tune up. I have had a few mags that the only practice that helped was hitting the trash can.

    Good Luck

    It's not worth the effort.

If there's one out there that works well, I haven't seen it. By the time you push, pull, jiggle, slap-on-the-bottom, & twist, you could have loaded & fired another 20 rounds using stripper clips.

If there's any threat that can't be dealt with using 10 rounds, you need to move to a safer neighborhood.

I think the safety has to be ON to take down. Stay away from the plastic magazines. I tried 3 before I gave up. They would only feed from one side and not the other.

There is a file available for free on the internet that tells you how to modify a fixed mag sks to accept a AK magazine.

The modification is illegal as you would be creating an 'assault weapon'.

it's labeled something like ak.zip or ak47.zip and I don't recall where I found it.

Don't do the mod until the ban sunsets.

Here's a good website that has detailed instructions on disassembly of the SKS & other surplus rifles.

    http://www.surplusrifle.com/

On that site there is an instructional on how to add a detachable 10rd magazine.

Good luck, I tried it with several mags and none of them fed or functioned properly. Better to just leave it alone. With stripper clips you can shoot off thirty rounds almost as fast without the problems of the cheap aftermarket mags. If you want high capacity, get an an AK or Ar15.
