Difference between short and long action

I own several Winchester Model 70 Rifles in various calibers - my question is I want to purchase a synthetic stock so my wood stocks don't get all scratched while hunting. I have seen several but they always say short action or long action. I feel kinda stupid, but I don't know. I have a .243, .270, .257 Roberts, 300 WM.
Thanks for your help!
Mike

.243 (.260, 7mm-08, .308)is short action, the rest are long action.

Has to do with the length of the case. Don't remember the exact break point but something like 2.5 inches. The .243 is derived from the short action .308, while the .257 is derived from the long action 7x57 and the .270 and -06 are also long. .300 Mag is long as well.
