anyone have experience with the 7.62x39 in a pistol length barrel?
stubby case, plentiful cheap components, popular plinking caliber-
all adds up to why can I not find a barrel for my CONTENDER?

I was told a while back that the pressure of a 7.62X39 was to much for the Contender frame???

That chambering is out there, but they didn't make a lot of them and of those that have been made most are carbine length, which is what I have.

May still be available from custom barrel makers.

You might want to check with Bullberry: www.bullberry.com

    or E.A. Brown: www.eabco.com

maybe even Virgin Valley is still in the game: www.virginvalleyguns.com

Contenderman was your barrel made by Thompson or one of the Custom barrel makers?

ATF - Mine is a Bullberry. I don't believe that T/C put out this chambering, but I would have to do a catalog search to be sure. However, it is my understanding that the T/C Custom Shop, Foxridge, put them out for a while, but I've never collected their catalogs or followed their offerings all that closely.

I've had my barrel for several years and I don't know if anyone is currently offering them, but you do see one up for auction every now and then.

Thanks Contenderman,I live about 40 miles from Fox Ridge and take a trip over there once in a while. They have a good source of once fired brass at good prices.I'm pretty sure that's where I heard that they didn't make that barrel because of the higher pressure.

I think we are hijacking this post, but the info does apply. Be very interested in what Foxridge has to say. I don't shoot mine a great deal, but over the years I've put maybe 200-300 rounds through it and never noticed any pressure related stress signs, but that don't mean that others haven't. If this post is locked out, please drop me an email with what you find out.

I don't see pressure being a problem (unless they are referring to the veriety of amunition sizes known to exist) thompson chambers the contender in 223 and that round's pressure is on a par with 7.62x39. after all the searching I've done it is about time for me to go back to plan "a". a while back I bought a 30 carbine barrel with the idea of rechambering to 7.62x39 but I always run the risk of becoming emotinally attached to my toys, such has happened in this case. plan "b" was to keep the 30 carbine barrel in tact. decisions, decisions, etc. thank you gentlemen for your help

I wouldn't do away w/ your 30 carb. I have 'em in both 10 inch and 21 inch and I enjoy shooting them, in fact I just plain enjoy the 30 carb. round. I even have a ruger Blackhawk, 7 1/2 barrel in 30 carb.

Quite a ball of fire especially from the Ruger, and a pretty darn good "bang" as well, but recoil is pretty low relative to the sight and sound show.

If no one is producing new 7.62x39 Contender barrels watch the auctions and one will come up. Also there is a fella in Okla., I believe his business is called Ed's Contenders and he generally has a large selection of barrels, his web site is: www.edstc.com

Guess what. The 30 Herrett is nearly identical. Get one of those. There are a lot of those out there and it's a super neat caliber. Of course you need to be a reloader.

I have a .30 Herret and used a Lee 7.62x39 case trimmer(with a slight modifaction) to trim Herret cases. The Herret is a good ,accurate round for deer but you will probably have to reform your own brass from 30-30.
