Bear Gun

Ok guys asked you this question before but, about to buy a 45-70 1895G for bear hunting but ? Ported or non-ported barrel? I hunt turkey with ported But never shot a ported rifle.... any differance .

    Going to Manitoba this Spring for Black Bear. Thinking about the Ruger Compact in 308. Thoughts?

    big........ apples and oranges............. night a day ........... ask a friend to experience it if you have one that has one them in both guns you'll know first hand what to think!!! if not think bicycle and harley!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!if you dont know that, think life and death.... what more can i say, but ride a bull and ride a rocking horse..............maybe then you get the idea.....again, apple and oranges

    it's not the type of gun you have in the heat of a battle that counts, only if you have enough ammo for it, lets face it, a gun without ammo is only as good as a base ball bat!!

    I would say for sure the ported model would be better. I know someone that owns the ported model, and even with it being ported he describes the recoil as if he is being kicked by a mule, the rocoil to those rifle are no joke at all.

    If at all possible try and find rifles that you can actually fire so you can have first hand experience of the difference in felt recoil and noise level.

    If folks find that they can handle the recoil w/o porting/compensators then I suggest that they skip them.

    I have an 1895 Cowboy. It's my pig and bear gun. I put a Williams peep sight on it with an .050 apperture. I load 300 and 350 gr jacketed bullets to no less than 1800fps. It's effective range is about 150 yds max. If you shoot it at a bench, without a shoulder pad, you'll be flinching so bad after 6 rounds from the pain that your accuracy is shot. From a standing position you can shoot for extended periods without any problems. It's more of a "push" instead of a "jolt." The porting on the Guide gun will help, but it will be LOUD.

    I personally dont think the recoil is that bad. Just a push. As stated if you go ported it will be loud.

    The recoil on the 1895 isn't that bad. I personally do not see the need for a ported barrel on one. You will be quite happy with the 1895 either way, but like Contender stated, you should try and test one out to see what your liking is and take it from there.

    MHO- the gun you mention in 45-70, you will have to hand load to realize it's potential. (you didn't say if you load or not) best I say it up front, I am NOT a fan of "porting". the unported gun loaded about two grains under max will shoot & handle just like a ported model at max less the noise. my gun is the 1895mr in 450 marlin with 22" unported barrel. what I am saying is hand loading will let you taylor "fodder for your iron" to what you want to shoot. porting is for the guy that doesn't load & is afraid he is getting more gun than he can handle. if you get the longer barrel unported and later want to change, simply add porting. by starting unported you have the option you would not the other way around. by the way go to GB home page & search "magnum research bfr" when you are ready for that companion six gun.
    P.S. my companion six gun is "freedom arm's 454 casull" I have both ported & unported in 7 1/2 barrel. the ported gun has to stay home because there is not that much difference (they both KICK) it aint no push.

    12 gauge shotgun with slugs works the best. Makes a big hole that wont close up with the animals own body fat. Nice blood trail!

    I agree to an extent with cussindemgun but keep in mind also that the porting will reduce muzzle rise and perhaps aid in that second shot and working the lever to get there! You did not mention what kind of bear you intend to hunt, I think. If you're talkin Brown bear it becomesrather academic as you would likely want something more along the lines of a modified Marlin in perhaps 500 Alaskan which uses mercury recoil buffers in the stock to reduce recoil...also a very expensive and involved conversion and a round not for the faint of heart ( or anyone under 250 lbs! ). One additional drawback to the porting is that I have had a few people next to me on the bench whine about catching shavings from the ports on firing! I think actually they were feeling some unburnt powder or the like, not jacketing material.
