Good, cheapish .223 plinker

With the price of .223 ammo I would like to get a semi auto chambered in it. I don't want to get an AR-15, as the only ones I like are expensive. So what else is there, new or surplus, in a reasonable price range? Mind you my ususal purchases are Mausers and such in the $150 and under range so I realize I may have to go a bit over that, but nothing over $300 or forget it.

The Russian Saiga, is the only one that fits your parameters.

CDNN was selling them for $200, awhile back. Don't know if they still have them?

I can't help with the semi auto, but if single shot is a possibility then the H&R would be worth a look. They are running at about $200 or so and are suppose to shoot real accurate.

.223 ammo isn't really that cheap anymore since the South African surplus dried up. Wolf .223 is $99/ 1000 where you can get 7.62x39 for $75/case. Get an AK or SKS. They aren't the nicest things around, but are accurate enough for plinking and reliable.

mini 14s are getting overpriced. how much are those kel tec rifles? thats the only one i can think of. my advice would be to save a little longer or maybe clean out a few of the guns you dont shoot anymore.

Saiga is the only choice in semi-auto for that price and I think the price you were given is for FFL only. Single shot...H&R is a good choice. Repeater...look at the old Savage 340/840's;nice acccurate little guns that won't break the bank.

If a single shot is not out of the question, you might take a look at the Rossi. I bought one two weeks ago, paid $170 for it, and while it isn't a "work of art", the dang thing shoots really well. Started off with factory ammo and was shooting 1" groups with it at 100 yds. That should shrink a bit with hand loads 'tuned' to the rifle, and a better scope on top of it.

    My 3.8 cents worth..

Silly fool...dont be a cheap *. You get what you pay for. Go for an EAA type .223 or ak variant if you can. OR, god hates you and says no to you.[xx(]

You'd probably have just as much fun with a single shot or a bolt repeater. Try a Savage 340. Mine is deadly on the gopher field out to 300yds. We can get them in Canada for $100-300CDN. Don't know what the US value is these days.

Thank you for that.... rude answer. So far as bolt actions and single shots go, I collect a lot of military rifles and need another bolt action like i need a hole in my head. I want a semi, plain and simple, and dislike most of the cheap ar clones out there. I guess I'll just go for a mini 14 or Saiga and call it a day.

if you are willing to pay the price for a Mini-14, which I know a person who spent around a $grand$ on one and it still wasnt that great, why not get an AR? you could shop around and buy an Upper and a Lower seperate, quality uppers can be had for as low as $200 if you just keep your eyes open. Lowers are like $250 new for a DPMS. Or spend $550 and get a Cavalry Arms AR-15, one-piece polymer lower, quality pice, and extremely accurate(most AR's are). Saiga's may be nice but are high caps available for them(lets ignore this silly ban sunset for a second[;)])? PLinking is more fun when you have 30rds or more on tap, just ask king joey.
    Some good "cheap" rifles:
    Cetme's
    SKS'
    AK's
    M1 Carbines (found a Universal for $275)
Garands (have seen shooters go for 500-550)
    Hakim's
but the only problem of the above(problem for you atleast), is that none are .223[|)]. The Hakim is chambered in the powerful 8mm, which should be the same as some of your Mausers(but my source says that the bolt action 8mm wasnt designed to be shot in the Hakim.
my tip, just be patient, look around at some shows and on GB for a rifle you like, disregaurd price or caliber, then save up and get what YOU WANT!!
