GRIP for the TAURUS 4510 Public Defender

The mono Ribber Grip on my Taurus Judge Public Defender is coming apart!?!?[?]
You may or not know that Taurus does NOT cover grips in their warranties, and I'm fine with that; because all I want is to BUY another, preferably in WOOD! There are Public Defenders sold now with a rosewood mono grip!!![:0]
Pistoleros:
I do NOT like the ribber grips on my Taurus Judge public defender![V] The "RIBBER" surface of the grips collect any and all manner of debris while the convoluted and TACKY surface of the Taurus Judge public defender grips make the revolver quite impossible to retrieve from any pocket in a timely fashion. Are there any other grips that would rectify these "perceived" problems? I would prefer wood, but a smooth surfaced synthetic mono grip will meet my requirements just as well . I'm recoil tolerant and do not believe that I should suffer any degree of increased sensitivity due to the lack of the ribber grips on my Taurus Judge public defender.

Thank you for any and all of your time concerning this issue.
John
The Taurus Customer Service(?) at 305-624-1115 and any e-mail contacts were non cooperative or completely disinterested/nonexistent in any thing resembling SERVICE!?!?!?

That unpleasantness aside; all I ask is that the ROSEWOOD GRIP for the TAURUS 4510 Public Defender be made available to me as an aftermarket ACCESSORIE!

As an customer it should be of no concern of mine whether or not it is available at this time; what any customer should hear from an truly interested company are some details on just how a request shall be completed too the SATISFACTION of that customer, hence " Customer Service"!

I own a couple of Taurus guns but none with that butt ugly ribber grip--If I ever own a Judge one of the first things I'd do is find something else to put on it or have some made. I did just that with my 850 CIA as I didn't like the rubber grips on it either. The new Raging Judge(Taurus you are getting goofy with the names btw) does not have the ribber grip but has the rubber with the red backstrap-maybe you can get taurus to give you one of those grips. At least on their website they do not show any rosewood grips that fit the Judge nor no new Judge with rosewood grips. Did Taurus tell you they were available or have you seen them on a gun at a store/gunshow?

    YES!!!
    but First: http://www.taurususa.com/repair-policy.cfm
    From Taurus:
Our Unlimited Lifetime Repair Policy extends to all Taurus firearms imported or manufactured by Taurus International Manufacturing, Inc.
This warranty does not cover grips, sights, accessories, cosmetic defects after one year, or damage caused by customer abuse at any time. Taurus will not be responsible for these items.

I was just wondering or trying to get the word out about aftermarket grips for the public defender; I know Taurus is making them because I see them on guns at various gun shows. I saw two different; a Rosewood and a modified/improved (less ribletts) rubber grips at a show and a store, so how would I purchase a new and different grip for my gun, is all I whant to know???

You're not going to like this answer .......[:(]

I believe the "Judge" series uses the same grip frame as the Tracker series - I learned this because I bought a Taurus 415 Total Titanium (41 Magnum, 2.5" ported bbl, 20 oz) that came with large rubber grips. This gun was bought for CCW & I greatly dislike rubber grips. I shopped around and found nothing. Even contacted Hogue and asked if the would sell me two separate halves of Ruger SP101 grips I could modify. I think they would have, but the shop foreman said they would be coming out with their own version eventually. That was last year - nothing thus far. Hogue does make a rubber set, they're not quite as large and offensive as the factory.

I found a set from Nill Grips - $130.00! They were larger target type grips for a 4" or 6" Tracker and I had to dress them down quite a bit, refinish into "boot grip" size. Here's the link:
    http://www.nill-shop.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=tracker&search_in_description=1

The Nills are overpriced, I don't see $150.00 of quality in their product. I suspect German workers are paid alot of money or there is quite an import fee on these things. Realistically they are a $70.00 grip at best.

I enjoy a challenge, but this was a major pain in the butt. With all the concealed carry sized "Tracker" framed guns out there I should think Taurus would make wood grips available. The Nill grips are fine, but they don't quite fit the concealed carry role and I think most folks will spend $140.00 on grips for a Taurus revolver; nor have the desire or ability to modify them.

BTW, shooting a 20 oz 41 Magnum with wood grips is quite a challenge.

Nill are "match" grade grips, and you're paying quite a bit for the word "Nill" on the grips and a whole bunch more on account of the weak dollar.

I own a set with the adjustable palm rest and so forth, and they're quite good, but really, I'd only consider putting them on a bullseye type gun. I agree that in general, the "ordinary" Nill grips are overpriced for what you get.

Personally, I wouldn't even dream of putting $130+ grips onto a Taurus "Judge". (I'll bite my tongue and not say what I suggest doing with the revolver itself).

Edit: Incidentally, I don't really conceive of a Taurus "Judge" as a concealed carry gun, but again, that's just my opinion.

In any case, any Taurus "tracker" grips should fit on the Judge. Taurus sells replacement solid monogrip grips on its website, and there should be a set in there that would work:

    http://www.taurususa.com/accesories-rgrips.cfm

Also, Hogue has a set of monogrip rubber that should work:
    http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=880874

I've heard that Hogue won't make aftermarket WOOD grips for the Taurus since their finished revolver grip dimensions vary too much for them to establish a consistent productions dimension. (Ouch!). The rubber grips have a bit of give in them than can help smooth out small differences in size.

If Hogue won't do it, I wouldn't hold my breath for others to do it, and this may explain why Taurus doesn't sell these on its website!

    EDIT:
quote:I know they (Taurus) have a rosewood grip for this gun and I want one why is that so hard??? JRB
I think you've answered your own question below (and I alluded to the same thing above).

Taurus probably isn't selling its rosewood grip as an aftermarket part because the grip would end up NOT fitting a lot of its own guns!

I'm not trying to * Taurus here, but again. . .ouch. This now gets added to the list of strikes against the Taurus judge. (The list includes bad ejector rod design, poor intrinsic accuracy, bad patterning with ordinary shot, anemic ballistics with buckshot, and a tendency for primers to back out of shotshells during firing, potentially locking up the gun).

Have you considered carving your OWN grips for your revolver?

Alternatively, you could always get a custom set of grips made to your exact specs (which is nice), but its going to be hard to find someone to do a good job for under $100 and also given the above size variance issue, you'd likely have to give the grip maker your gun for a while to have them custom fitted.

Thanks dsf, but you are right I don't like the idea of a $140 replacement grip for my public defender, but it is a start! I would really like to find an ear at TAURUS so as to get an idea moving toward an better accessories aftermarket for their established customer base!!!! I know they have a rosewood grip for this gun and I want one why is that so hard???

Found this in another forum (see below), and it is interesting to see that others have similar concerns; however this is OLD news as Taurus DOES have a rosewood grip on the public defender as evidenced right here on gun broker: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=195285189
as well as many other web sites! Grips even have the Taurus logo on them, so I think Taurus would be the source, but when I asked them they said NOT available!?!?!?

I have made contact with Taurus and they do not offer any other grips for the Trackers except the Ribber and the Mono styles. I asked for any suggestions on wood grips, they referred me to Hogue. I made contact with Ron at Hougue and he informed that they are currently unable to manufacture wood grips for the Trackers due to a lack of exacting standards by Taurus' machinery, he simply told me that the variences on the final products from Taurus is not consistant enough to mass produce a wooden grip as yet. Basically, until the variences are exact of a regular basis, the rubber grips are the only ones you can pound into position to fit properly.

    Thanks
    John

Ok after seeing the pics I can tell you one thing--Those are special grips for a Talo Edition gun. Talo is a distributor who orders guns from different manufacturers and then adds things or has the factory add things like special grips & engraving that will ONLY go on Talo Edition guns. Here's a Talo Edition Ruger .22 http://www.taloinc.com/images/MKIII_Deluxe_Big.jpg

You will not be able to buy those grips from Taurus--the only way you can get them is either buy a Talo Edition gun or keep watching the Internet including the Taurus forums for a set someone took off their gun-maybe put a want ad out. You also might contact one of the custom grip makers like our own oldemagics www.oldemagics.com as MAYBE he can make you a set if he can get his hands on a Judge with YOUR guns frame size.

Well Erik that finally explains to my feeble brain just what is going on, I wish you worked for Taurus customer service! I have not given up and suspect Taurus will some day provide wood grips for the public defender.

I think that the public defender series of the judge line takes the model 85 taurus grip. Check out some of those grips. I bought a pair recently for a model 85 that were eagle wood grips.
