I purchased a 1976 Detective Special can they handle +p loads? Not for shooting on a regular basis, but carry?

    Yes.
In spite of the Timid Internet, any reasonably modern .38 Spl can handle enough +P to let you feel the recoil and check the sights and then win several lifetimes worth of gunfights.

It is steel framed. I'm not sure how it would do with a steady diet of +P's. I carry what I shoot all the time in my model 60 S&W, which is a full 38 Special load. Many 1000's of rounds later t is still a nice tight pistol that shoots well.
