I've been looking at these for awhile and it looks like the Springfields command a pretty good price, $700+ range. At a gun show a couple of weeks ago I saw one that I think was a National Ordinance or maybe American Ordinance 03A3. The price was below $400. I know very little about these rifles, is there that big of difference between brands as far as price goes? Would one priced that low probably be junk?

Yes, they are not the most desirable 1903s. National Ordnance, Federal Ordnance, Santa Fe Arms--all less than desireable. These were all constructed out of surplus parts ranging from new to condemned parts, and some of them have cast receivers. Why don't you take a look at the Civilian Marksmanship Program website, www.civilianmarksmanshipprogram.com as they currently have for sale what is reputed to be the very last 1903s and '03-A3s held by the Army, and they are priced in the same range as the National Ordnance you were looking at. Intend to get one myself.

But don't you have to participate in matches or at least be part of a shooting organization? AFAIC, probably more trouble than it's worth given the amount of spare time I have.

    GreenLantern,

You can check out the requirements at the CMP url given above. I think it would be well worth the effort to qualify for a CMP 1903.
I believe the qualification firing would be educational and beneficial to you getting experience shooting in competition. Some of my best friends and the finest people I have ever known were those I met on rifle ranges.
