I have Colt 1911 marked US property made in 1943 that is nickel plated. My question is it possible that this gun came from the factory nickel plated.

Don't qoute me on this, but in my experience many guns that come from the factory nickel plated have a "P" as the 1st or last digit in the serial number.

I have to go with Saxonpig on this one. I seriously doubt its factory. Somebody probably bought it surplus and then had it plated. If anything, it would have lost its collectors value, unless you had paperwork tracing it back to an officer who had it nickel plated. If anything sounds like a good one to customize.

Nickel plating of war souveniers was not uncommon after WW2 and Korea.
It was and is a means of covering up a bad or rusted finish.
Another possibility is that some VFW units parade with chromed or nickeled arms and it could be one of these.
If someone other than a General officer nickeled his 45 he'd have to buy it at the very least.
