Kel-Tec P-11; Pro/Con?

For the young person looking to own a firearm, is the P-11 a good choice? What considerations for the gun can be made?

Also, does the Kel-tec p-11 have any peculiarities (eg. malfunctions, unsual tendancies)?

I've run 400 rounds throuh my P-11 with absolutely no malfunctions. It will take all brands of ammo with ease. Light weight, small and the heavy trigger pull is a safety feature;little chance of inadvertant fire.

I carry mine every day. It's completely reliable, eats everything I feed it and lightweight.

Great little guns, I've only found one single thing I don't like and thats the trigger pull is to long, but everything else is great in my opinion.

Also you may want to look into ways to break it in right, that way it performs a little better down the road. I don't remember the website, but I know someone here does, ask around.

As soon as I get enough money I plan to buy one myself.

I hear that sometimes they need a little touching up to be 100% reliable, but simple things only. Stuff like polishing the ramp, filing off little burrs, and a good cleaning will do the trick.

Yes, they are REALLY small and lightweight. A thin man could hide one while he was wearing gym shorts. But the above was right, the trigger pull is REALLY long. It may be a safety feature, but you're still gonna be suprised when you see for yourself.

I chose the P11 over any other gun availabe at any price in its size and power category. If I thought there were a better gun in its size and power category, I would buy and carry it. In my opinion, it is the best. The fact the the P11 is so inexpensive is merely an added bonus.

To me, one of the big positives for the P11 is that it uses Smith & Wesson M59-pattern magazines, which are readily available at reasonable prices. I can carry a full-size 17-round Mec-Gar magazine for a spare. That means I have 28 rounds available in not much space or weight.

If you encounter any problems with your P11, factory service is first-rate. The KTOG owners group has boards that deal with just about anything you want to know about the P11.

I bought a P-11 several years ago when they were first introduced on the market. Since then I've put countless rounds through it with no jams or malfunctions. I've carried it in my glove box, tucked it in the waistband of my jeans, and even carried it as a back-up weapon for a time. The only downside I've seen is the long trigger pull, but the upside is that it does make for a good safety issue. The finish on mine is pretty worn by now, but aside from the cosmetics the gun is flawless. It's a darn good buy and a reliable weapon for the money.

Has anyone had any experience with the .40 caliber adapter and how it well it works?

I could very well be wrong, but I heard that the 40 was to stressful on the frame when you convert from 9mm to 40.

OH by the way, Red Meat, when I asked your age, it's because when I turned 21, every time I had an extra dollar I had a plan for another gun.

To answer you orig. question, if you HAVE shot handguns before, a P-11 is a fine choice. However, if you have NOT, I'd probably go for a full size. It's just that the subcompacts tend to have a lot more felt recoil, and if you are not used to shooting, it will cause ou to develop a flinch... They are very hard to get rid of!

I bought one of the 40 S&W conversions when the came out, and it has worked well for me. I had to polish the feed ramp and the breach face, but I do that to all Kel-tec guns. I would recommend that you buy the correct 40 mag for maximum reliabilty. I have used the 9mm mag, but the 40 works smoother. If you can find one, I would buy it since they have stopped making the p-40 guns. I use one for a pocket carry gun regularly. It has about the most power for it's size that I have found
