What can I expect out of the 17hmr in terms of range and accuracy? I'm seriously looking at the Marlin 17v. I know what my 22mag can do at 100 yards on small critters but want something with a little more reach. Or would a 223 work better? I know a lot of you all have them now, your opinions as always are greatly appreciated.

there was a thread on the general discussion board about this caliber just yesterday. here is the link...there is some info there.

if not enough, the march 2002 issue of American Rifleman had a feature article on the caliber.

I HAVE ALL THRE AND EACH SERVICES ITS PURPOSE. 17 WHEN THE WIND DOES NOT BLOW. 22 MAG CCI+5 TO 150 YARDS AND THEN USE THE .223. WHY TRY TO MAKE ONE GUN WORK WHEN YOU CAN USE THREE?? LOL

I WOULD RATHER BE DUCK HUNTING.

I assure you the 223REM will out perform the .17HMR.As far as the range mine is a fine rifle on rodents out to 150 yrds. For a rimfire it is quit impressive. My only complaint is the price of the ammo,Im in hopes it will come down some,as other ammo manufactures market the ammo.

    Best!!

No doubt I'll have to add both calibers, I'm getting there eventually.
The local shops here swear by the 17hmr. Thanks for the input. I guess I'll have to ease them into the house one at a time.

I've been looking real serious towards one of these rifles. These forums and threads are great for the input you need to hear. I wish I would have known about this forum years ago.

The 17HMR is more fun than eatin beans!!! I have a 17VS and I put a 4.5-14Nikon on it. I and my 13 year old daughter have killed 46 groundhogs with it so far. The longest confirmed measured kills have been 206(2) and 202 yards! We have shot a bunch in the 160-185 yard range. To me the most amazing thing about it is the accuracy!! Mine will group consistenly under 1/2 inch at 100yards and at 200 yards is consistently under 1 inch!! Nothing done to it, strictly out of the box! I got another one for a friend and put the same scope on it and it does it too! Sighted in 1.25 inches high at 100 you'll be 5.2 inches low at 200. Also the little bullet is losing punch severely at 175+. If you don't hit the head or neck you can expect some crawl-offs. You will also have some that drop right there but are still alive when you go check them out. If nothing else this gun has really gotten my daughter excited about shooting!! She shot before but not like now. She has shot at 10 and has 8 confirmed kills. Get yourself one and enjoy and take a kid shooting!!! GHD

If you want 17 cal., get a .17rem so you can handload.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

leeblackman, If I wanted another damn catrtidge to reload, I'd get one!! But for now it's fun as can be to shoot and not worry about picking up cases and going thru the rigors of having another batch of stuff in the reloading room! I'll agree that reloading is fun and rewarding. I've probably reloaded more cartridges than you've ever seen gathered together in one place! It's just that this one is purely for fun and having a kid have fun too!! This is twice I've corrected you this week. GHD

hehehe, I feel the same way sometimes. You get tired of picking up brass after everytime you shoot.
