Remington Model 597, Hammer not working properly

Hi everyone, I have a remington model 597 22 rifle that likes to not fire quite often. Ive tried different ammo with no luck. Yes even green label cci.
Looks to me like the hammer is not hitting hard enough to put a good mark on the rim of the case. It did this right out of the box from new and now with 500 rounds through it there is no improvement.
I am wondering if there are other people with the same problem I have And if you were able to cure your problem what did you have to do ?

I had a feeding problem with the same gun, I took the bottom off the 10 round clip and ran it over some 120 grit sand paper a little, took the red follower out of the magazine and debured it with a small file, And debured the outside of the plastic magazine, such as the mold casting marks and all sharp edges, Cleaned it up and put it back togeather, Now I do not have a feeding problem any more at all, I did this with all my plastic clips for this rifle with excelent results. I have not tried there new metel clips yet, So I do not know if they cured the problem or not with the metel clip.

Any help with my misfire problem would be a great.

Robert

Send it back to Remington... Thats my only advice. I have a Remington 597 my father gave to me that he won at a Ducks Unlimited banquit. And I can definately say I'm less than impressed. But if its still under warranty, send that puppy back to Remington and make them fix it or send you a new one.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

It replaced the Viper, another Remington lemon, the 597 is the same.
Much as I like Remington .22`s, I will not buy either model, though accuarate.....they both suffered from misfeeds and non-firing problems. They don`t go away. Best LTS

Yup, I agree, if you can take it back were you bought it and get your money back, you might look into getting a Ruger or a Marlin.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

I had intended on buying a 597 my self, not that I need another 22 but I have read alot of horror tales on this forum and others.I would send the gun back to Remington explaining the problem, hopefully they will modify the problem.

Don't do it man. Trust me. Even with the new metal magazines, they don't work.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

There is a good site to try to get some more answers on your problem with the 597.http://rimfirecentral.com/forums/

I have had problems with mine also, put a new custom hammer in and it made a big difference.

    Good Luck.

    Even with the feeding?

I'm still waiting for some company out there to come out with some quality aftermarket magazines for them. It obvious that Remington plans on making a bunch of them, I'm just waiting for the aftermarket accessories to catch up. So far I've seen bull barrels and thumbhole stock and aftermarket hammers, but not much more.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

Hay coyote-man, Was the new custom hammer heavier then the stock hammer That made it work better ? Did the rim of the spent case from the new hammer look like it was getting hit harder? Who was the hammer made by? How much better did the new custom hammer work, As far as misfires.
This misfire problem is the only problem I need to correct, If I can get this problem cured im a happy man.

Hay everyone, I came to the conclusion that Im gonna ADD some weight to my stock hammer, Tig weld a small piece of weight to it, And try this before spending money for an aftermaket one. Hopefully this will hit the rim of the cartridge case harder and will cure the missfire. Ill let everyone know my results after smome test fireing.

Why don't you just put a stronger spring behind it? Be easier.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

Reshape the contact point where the hammer inguages the shear to make the travel of the hammer shorter so it will lose less energy.

If you go to the site that I had posted above you will find a section there on the 597, a lot of your questions can be answered there.

A lot of folks are using the Volquartsen hammer and it really made a difference in mine. I had about a 7 lb trigger pull and now with the new hammer it is a nice 1 1/2 lb.

Lots of people are having the problem with the plastic magazines and are getting some replacements from Rem (steel) which is helping greatly to improve the function of the feeding.

The miss fires that I have had, have been with the use of PMC 22WRM shells, I think they are to low in powder and they will not cycle the bolt all the time.
