since the original thread was locked, a new one emerges.
To correct a statement made by the generally competent one; the tritium is encapsulated in a glass container, and in a gaseous form. I have had the unfortunate experience of breaking said glass capsule during the installation process of a Meprolight front sight on a 1911 slide, and I can assure you that if you break the capsule, the gas escapes, leaving a workable front sight, which is no longer self-luminous. Staking those 1911 fronts without breaking the capsule is one of gunsmithing's little challenges. The Meprolight has shoulders on the sides of the front blade, and if you have just the right jig to take the force of staking, you can avoid crushing the gas capsule. Easier said than done!
