When UPS can't FIND what was shipped...

O.K. so UPS requires FFL's to ship Next Day Air - at additional expense - and they give you a tracking number. Anybody have any experience with them not being able to FIND an item that was shipped, beyond when it was first logged into their system? Last item I was expecting was shipped USPS & they busted it up good.

HOW LONG AGO WAS THE ITEM SHIPPED?? NEXT DAY AIR TAKES A DIFFERENT TRACKING CODE.

I WOULD RATHER BE DUCK HUNTING.

A friend of mine (after over 25 years of wanting to) finally went to Alaska. While he was there he bought a few "future" presents for his family and friends. Because of space considerations on the airplane he shipped them back to his home. They lost the package, tracking numbers and all. He also sells a bit on online auctions. Twice they have lost other packages. He has since decided to use another carrier. The Alaska ordeal was the final straw, because those gifts can not be replaced.

If I knew then, what I know now.

Tracking number (provided by shipper) brings up Next Day Air on UPS's tracking website, received 7/30 in New York (upstate) for delivery 7/31 in Illinois. No change as of 7 AM CDT 8/2.

I'm sure we all will at one time or another have some type of problem no matter what the carrier. UPS delivered an EMPTY package one time for me; a 22 Hornet Contender Carbine barrel was lost on that one. It took about 2 months to settle the claim. The only thing that saved me was that I knew the owner of the mail house I shipped it from. He called UPS and vouched for me. I'm pretty sure the default response for any UPS claims is NO or Denied. Sometimes the best insurance is paying the extra couple of bucks to let them pack and ship it so they cannot blame you for packaging.

My experience has been that the tracking info is a couple of days behind. Several times packages have arrived and the tracking info still has it half way accross the country.

Once I had my Dealer order a handgun for me,wasnt long after UPS decided they had to ship handguns second day or whatever. My gun was supposed to come in on a thursday,I drove about 12 miles to my Dealer that evening and it did not come in.So they told me it would be in the next day/friday.I go again still had not come in so the Dealer called his supplier and they told him when It had been shipped all that bull, and they tracked it.The gun had been delivered to the wrong store,I was beginning to get angry with the Dealer as I felt he should have called me the days it didnt come.So the Dealer said it will be here tomorrow, and I said the UPS doesnt run on Saturday does it,yeah he replied on special deliveries. He said were not charging you for shipping.Needless to say it was Monday before it came. One week from when I ordered it.And if he took off the price of shipping he added it somewhere else.Ive not done business with that dealer since.I still get ill thinking about it.

In brief, all's well now. Item shipped 8/30 for Next Day Air delivery to Illinois. Tracking number sticker fell off after initial scan. Package, addressed properly, made it to Illinois but could not be delivered without tracking information, sooooooo, back it went to New York for a NEW sticker & another ride west to Illinois. Parcel arrived - apparently none the worse for the additional 1300 mile journey - at my FFL transfer dealer around Noon today. I'd TOLD the seller/shipper I'd pay for FedEx Next Day Priority as I'd had bad experience with both the Post Office & UPS.

spclark, glad to hear it showed up. Most of the time when the tracking number stalls, it means the package 'fell off the back of the truck' - whether the carrier is UPS, FedEx or USPS. None of them do a particularly good job.
