I just picked an old Stevans 12ga single shot with button breach. It is marked with a 3in chamber. Can 2 3/4 in shells be used in this gun.
I dont know much about shotguns. So thanks for any help.

    Yes, you can safely fire 2 3/4in 12ga shells in a 3in 12ga chamber.
Going shorter is not a problem, going longer is.
    Trivia:
Shotgun shells are measured by their uncrimped length, so just because a crimped shell fits does not mean that it is the correct length for the chamber.
Gauge comes from the lead gaugeing balls used to measure the bore size, 10 balls per pound = 4ga, 10 balls per pound = 10ga etc.

Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.
