Can I shoot modern steel shot in an old shot gun?

Hello,
With Dove season coming in the south I would like to know. I have an old Remington hump back I recently acquired and I have not shot it. Will it destroy the barrel ? Please advise.

What is the choke on your Remington? If it is tighter than mod, it you may experience some problems such as ringing.

    Hello flinch

    1. At the risk of asking as dumb * question, does your state require steel shot for DOVE???????
My state, Florida, certainly does not, neither does Federal Regulations.

    2. Horse-hockey!!!! and yes I have 5 in the pasture and hunt off of them --- how many do you have??? I am older than any two or maybe three of you put together. Unless you have been "afield" over 51 years, then I am your senior. I have humps-backs and if the choke is improved cylinder or more "open" and you have chosen your wad correctly, it will NOT cause a problem in your barrel with steel shot.

No Offense Intended and Best Regards

P.S. Please allow me to rephrase that. The only shotgun I own with screw-in choke tubes is a Baretta Silver Pigeon in 28 gauge, and I darn sure don't shoot steel-shot in it. Everything else, including my 149+ year old muzzle stuffer WITHOUT screw-in chokes, all with improved cylinder or "more" OPEN chokes have had steel-shot with the the "PROPERLY" chosen wad/shot-cup combo and black-powder{Elephant}, CleanShot, or modern smokeless-powder (Blue-dot and others)have had steel-shot through them without any ill effect.

P.S. --- Yes I own other shotguns, but I rather hunt with my Damascus barreled Ladies. It is a whole "nother" world to step down off of a fine 17 "hands" horse and bring a Damascus barreled shotgun to bear out of the saddle scabbord on a rising covey. Unfortunately for me and all of YOU as well, this is a passing ERA(!!!!!!!!) NEVER to be seen again.

    Hello Quail.
Thanks to you and all who answered. The choke is wide open, looks like a blunder bust. To answer your question: In S.C. lead shot is prohibited for waterfowl hunting. I may do some marsh hen hunting too, which is a waterfowl. I use to Quail hunt but now you dont find them in the fields. You have to crawl around in the bushes and briars with the rabbits. The old habitat is plowed under or is a sub division/ shopping center now.

    Hello flinch

    1. My wife and I enjoyed the sight of "mana & papa" quail and "36" "walking-pinecones" in our yard yesterday. Our allowed inside the house - German-wirehair could see them through the front door and was having a canary. Later that day, she was allowed outside and "FROZE" where they had been. You couldn't have made her move if you ran over her with a bulldozer.

    2. No!!!! -- I will NOT shoot them on my property. They are game if and only if they are in the national forest or on someone else's soybean field.

    3. Yes -- I use very OLD Damacus barreled SXS shotguns for hunting.
Yes -- I am equipped to load for them. You have absolutely NO BRAINS if you load them with modern smokeless-powder loads ---- NO!!!! I don't care if you use "low-brass" shells like your buddy told you --- your "BUDDY" is "WRONG". If they are not black-powder or a black-powder substitute such as "CleanShot", you are risking destroying your OLD Damascus barreled "LADY" and injuring yourself. But what the hey -- it's your shotgun and your life and your health --- do with it what ever you want to.

    Absolutely No Offense Intended:
    Best Regards

    flinch,
ADAMS IS VERY WELL QUALIFIED TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION.
AS AN ADDER, I HAVE SEVERAL OF THOSE M-11'S. BEST DARN AUTO LOADER MADE, OFCOURSE IT IS A BROWNING. I SHOOT DOVE W/ MINE, DO NOT REQUIRE STEEL SHOT UNLESS ON A FLYWAY. I DEFINITELY SHOOT STEEL W/ THE MORE OPEN CHOKES. BISMUTH IS AN ALTERNATIVE. STATE LAWS VARY, THUS CHECK YOUR REQUIREMENTS. I AM ACTUALLY A SxS PERSON, LOVING MY PARKERS AND
FOXES, WHICH I WOULD NEVER SHOOT STEEL THRU. ADAMS IS OLDER THAN ME BY A FEW YEARS, PERHAPS TEN, BUT A MOST RESPECTED SHOTGUNNER. GO WITH WHAT HE SAYS. ADAMS AND I MAY PERHAPS THINK ALIKE. I RESPONDED TO A POST RE: CRESCENT BUTT PLATES ONLY BEING SHOT OFF THE ARM. MY RESPONSE WAS: HORSE HOCKEY. 101
