Is it true that several states allow citizens to purchase silencers?[?] I thought they were federally illegal. Which states do? Does Canada? Could you bring it back to a state that allows them if you got one in Canada? Thanks.[;)]

What is the specific law as it relates to putting a silencer onto a .22 pistol or rifle?

How much to comply with the law? permits etc..

    How much is a silencer?

    Hello,
Here in Finland, Silencers are legal to buy. I was just wondering some basic knowledge about them. First, is there any specific calibur, or can ROUGHLY the same size cal be used. Also, i have seen guns with silencers on them. The end of the barrel is turned into a screw so that the silencer can go over top... how would you make that? OR i have seen something that i am guessing you just fit over the barrel and it locks over the forward sight, i'm GUESSING this is like the attachment, but once again, i dont know. If you could please let me know, that would be great. I dont want to ask them in english... and i dont understand finnish yet so:-P
    THANKS!

I would LOVE to have one. My police chief will likely not sign off... going to start work on getting one.

Useful to me for 'yote hunting in the early mornings/late evening when I do not want to disturb the 'somewhat built-up' (between urban and rural) ares I hunt coyotes in.

I hear that Sure-fire makes the finest for the CAR15/M16 variants. The military has a contract with them.

No civilian sales though. I called the company...they are manufacturing in Kalifornia and have an agreement with the state authorities that they would NOT sell to civilians (I am refering to civilians that DO obtain the necessary federal and state documentation).

    GO FIGURE!!!!

Are they as silent as in the movies or is that just for show? I have never fired one and was curious. In addition what is the general life span of a quality silencer? Im trying to figure out if its worth purchasing so I stop pissing off the neighbors.

I once was going to an official pistol shoot in Kanada (my spelling, like in Kalifornia), and had in my possession an RCMP authorization. At the border crossing, I advised the Kanadian Customs officer I had a gun and the circumstances. She turned pale, advised a supervisor, instructed me to park and take it into the desk. An agent met me at the car and escorted me in (with the cased competition revolver). After playing 20 questions and having the RCMP document varified, I was allowed to continue. Left with the feeling I was trying to get away with something earthshakingly illegal. Never went back to another shoot. Looked to me like it would be a good way, as a minimum, to lose a good gun to confiscation by Kanadian Authorities[xx(]

There is no such thing as a Firearm "Silencer" It is IMPOSSIBLE
to silence a gunshot, If you are refering to a supressor they are Illegal for citizens in MOST ALL states with the exeption of a Few,
I suggest to contact the BATFE for the facts reguaring supressors
before you even think about messing with them Unless your into
    the Pen cornhole games[xx(]

any state allowing class III firearms allows "supressors". they fall under class III regulations.

As has also been stated,...as long as the load is subsonic,..they sound like a slight breeze. However,..a pill travelling from a rifle at that slow a speed,...drops quickly. A shooting buddy of mine is the head "sharpshooter" of our city SWAT team,...and upon watching him shoot his issue 308 steyer with a "suppressor" I have quickly abandoned any desire to own one. His 308 when sighted in at 100yds to be subsonic,..drops FEET at 200yds,..and 300yds is like trying to shoot 1000yds with a normal caliber. these are best reserved for professionals who have to interdict in hostage situations from across the street and no farther. Kind of worthless for anything else.

The 1 time fee for application is something on the order of $600 for the paperwork,..and then a good suppressor will run ~$800-$1000,....not really much benefit when you look at it monetarily.

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

I stand corrected nononsense,..the ~$600 is the current annual renewal fee for my dealer to have his class III license current, the $200 is YOUR fee for application as a resident.

I read an article not long ago about these super high tech suppressors for bolt action rigs such as the 700rem,..and they were awesome,...but around $1200[:(]

    JustC,

They are awesome! But what's really interesting is that anti-gun countries like Great Britain not only sell suppressors but recommend their use for hunting. Go figure... The Scandinavian countries manufacture and use them, also. They have some really good designs as well.

The $200.00 is not a fee, it is a tax, that's exactly how the BATFE words it. I'm not trying to be rude, just impart some information.

    Best.

what i want to know is why you need a suppresser? seems to me that only people that need one for good purpesses needs one , and they either know how to get one, or like me know how to make one. keep in mind that knowedge is not illegel, only action is...because idont need one myself yet but maybe will if our nation falls, but if you dont need one then why ask in the first place. or are you a criminal that is just starting out and want our help ?

it's not the type of gun you have in the heat of a battle that counts, only if you have enough ammo for it, lets face it, a gun without ammo is only as good as a base ball bat!!

stalion10, it is not the criminals who buy suppressors. They surely are not going to go through the background check, the fingerprinting, and the $200 tax. If you can't think of a reason to own one, then you must not wear hearing protection, or you must not have neighbors where you shoot. Do you have a muffler on your car?

Being a Canadian, I would agree with you that the government is far too liberal in its stance.

However, having said that, the regularity of Americans driving to the border and expecting to just bring their guns in with them (as if we, as a country, was merely an extension of the States) is suprising. Guns just happen to be one of the most confiscated items at the border (especially the "oops, forgot about the one in the glovebox" types).

Also, I've almost had my pistols confiscated driving into Amerika (my spelling[}:)]) for a competitive shoot in Indiana, and that was with my RCMP transport permits. My guns were run through their computers, my car and luggage were searched, and I was fingerprinted.

    Lovely.

So don't think it only occurs in one direction.

    gotcha nononsense.[:)]

I think the article I read was one where they were using the suppressors on a 308 M24 or something of the like. They gave accuracy results and such,...sound familiar? the guy who invented this design was en ex-spec ops soldier. He got the military to look at them and when they placed an order he sold them at cost,..stating he wanted our boys to have the best possible gear. Now that is a patriot[8D]
