Handi-Rifle in 45-70gov't

I have one and shoot 300gr JHP in, I would like to know how much pressure can these guns handle what would be the biggest grain bullet I could shot in it SAFELY?I'm shooting factory loads. I called H&R customer service the lady I talked to should really drink a bullet[;)] After 20 minutes of her I was ready to get rid of this gun.And no where closer to finding out can anyone help me?

can't give you a exact answer but they do chamber the rifle in 30-06 which I believe is rated at 52,000 if that helps at all[:I]

I shot 405's out of my Buffalo Classic when I had it if that helps.

Call the mfg., tell them model and chambering and as them for the maximum, certified, working pressure for the gun ... then w/ what ever loads you are contemplating stay under that pressure and you'll be fine.

Asking phone reps questions about maximum bullet weight, what is a safe pressure ... etc, will only throw most into a "tizzy" as no one want to put their neck on the line ... but a manufacturing specification should be a no brainer and if the first person can't answer it ask for a supv., and keep bumping it up the line till you get the answer.

That's really the most prudent route as you are then talking with the people that built the rifle.

I think I'm right on this....
the size of the bullet is less important than the amount of powder pushing it.That big case can hold a lot of powder,and certain guns can stand up to a lot of powder being used....for other guns you reduce the charge and/or change powders.

not too sure about the specs on the handi rifle but i do reload 45-70 for my pistol... and i know the pressure on most of your ammo factory and otherwise normally runs between 22 and 28,ooo psi...
