Hey guys,
I just found your forum and I really like what I see.

I am thinking about buying a yugo sks from an online surplus store like SOG. I have no experience with these stores. Is the $10 hand pick fee worth it?

Thanks.
Nate

It really depends, personally sometimes I do sometimes I don't.

Example, I wanted a m48a they had shooters grade and handpicked I chose shooters because I am very comfortable with fixing stocks and I don't mind small scratches that don't ruin the overall appearance, I personally believe it gives a used gun character especially a war era gun. the m48a cost me 130 bucks.

However anything with synthetic stocks, or that cost over 400 bucks I would almost definitely get hand picked.

From what I've seen I think they are. Not that straight from the stack stuff is pure junk, but the picked ones are typically in better shape, and the fee's typcially are pretty minimal, such as the $10 you mentioned.

Of course it all centers on who you are buying from. There are some pure junk merchants out there. SOG has a pretty good rep. so do some of the others ... if you come across one that you know nothing about put up a post here to see what the members know about the dealer.

I think that the extra fee is usually worth it..Though when I once asked on the phone what I could expect for my $20 extra, an honest order taker told me "we get another $20"!....

Hand picked??? I put my hand on this one & pick it, you pay extra $10.00. If not my other hand picks the same one & you save $10.00. Do you realy think someone in the shipping dept making maybe $6.00 an hour is going to look over 5 or 10 grease rifles & hand pick the best one.!!!!????

My experience with SOG "handpick V. non handpick" hasn't made to much difference unless the handpick was including "original box v. no box" etc.
I have paid the extra 10$ just to see for myself on the same order had them ship me one straight out of the crate and there was no noticeable difference.

Over the years I've bought maybe 7 or 8 handguns from SOG .I paid the extra for hand pick and got a brand new gun every time.Maybe that's just my Luck?

I too have had good luck with SOG and the 'hand pick' fee. I have purchased 16 guns from them over the last few years using the option in all but 5 cases. Of the 11 hand picks one of them in particular, a Ballester Molina had a poor crown and I felt it was generally not up to snuff with the other 2 Ballesters I'd gotten from them. I called and asked for a return/exchange. Was told that in light of the fee I had paid I would have no proble with this, the shipping both ways would be paid and got a profuse apology. When the replacement showed, it was by far the best of the 3 I bought from them and the fee had been refunded on the returned gun. I think that pretty well covers what you can expect from one of the better known and more reputable dealers like SOG.

Is sog http://www.southernohiogun.com/ ? I have never heard of them before, but I notice they have some nice looking .50 bmg's at a very decent price.

The only place I have ordered guns from has been, AIM http://www.aimsurplus.com/

A fellow hanger-out at the gun store insists the hand-pick fee is worth it. He bases that one one time of NOT paying it, versus another time when he paid it.
