Thinking of buying a Sporterized Type Stock for a Mauser. How do I determine wether I have a Lg. Ring or Small ring ? I did not know of this differance.

Also would like to know if I have to change the angle of the Bolt Handle?

Mauser's with a Large ring Across the face of the receiver will measure 1 3/8 . You can also measure the trigger guard screw holes, From center hole to center of other hole should measure about 7 7/8 or 7.830.

Mausers with a Small ring. Across the face of the receiver will measure 1 1/4. You can also measure the trigger guard screw holes, From the center of the holes measure , it should measure about 7 5/8 or 7.625.

if you are going to add a scope, you will need a bent bolt handle.

Boyd's builds stocks for 98 Mausers, in both walnut and laminate. take a look at www.boydboys.com I have one of their JRS Classic laminates and it is a terrific stock.

for just changing the stock you shouldnt have to modify the bolt just remove stock material so the bolt fully closes, unless you want a scope , then like jake said you will. even though the k98's bolt is bent factory, it still isnt enough to clear a reciever mounted scope. you have 4 options
1 get a forged 98 bolt or get yours forged
2 install a scout mounted scope [ in place of the rear sites ]
3 an ati bolt conversion kit [ cut yours off drill tap install their bolt handel ]
4 get an iron elite off center extended scope mount [ pricey ]

    i'd recommend 1. or 2. over 3. and 4.

Installing, bedding and finishing a sporter stock is well within the means of anyone with reasonable wood working skills and temperment. But if you want to go the bent bolt and scope route figure on sending it out to a gunsmith. ER Shaws will drill and tap for like $40 and weld in a new sporter bolt handle for like $50.

    s.gun,
Before you do anything with your Mauser, have it looked at by somebody that knows Mausers.Even a old beatup one could be a rare model.Check value twice, sporterize once.Have seen too many valuable firearms ruined.
