A Friend gave me some FEDERAL 223 Brass, once fired I loaded it up and shot it and when I went to reload it again the Primer pockets were oversized, I remembered about a year ago I found the same thing on some FEDERAL 308 brass, Is this common with FEDERAL Brass??? And NO I Did NOT load HOT. I never have problems with Remington or Winchester Brass.[V]

    Hi Chuck,
It's possible that you may have a bad batch of brass, but I doubt it.I think the problem may be with your powder. Do you know the history of the powder? Did you buy it new, unopened, from a Gun Shop? Not long ago I had a friend buy an open can of powder at a Gun Show-- it turned out it was NOT the type of powder indicated on the label.Did you seat your rounds close to maximum overall length? If seated too deep it is possible your pressure was way too high. That can cause expanded primer pockets. My guess would be to question the powder-- did you use the same powder to load both calibers? If in doubt--toss it out.[:)]
    Good shooting--

    chuck,

I had to quit using Federal brass several years ago when I found ejector marks on the base of the rim from mild loads. Evidently, the brass is soft. So I just quit using any brass from Federal. This was .308 Federal Match ammunition. Several of us were using their Match brass at the time and all of us had the same experiences. We called Federal and they said that there was nothing wrong with that run of brass so we just crushed it and moved on to other brands.

Before anyone starts second guessing that it was the rifle's fault or the chamber or the nut behind the stock, these were all custom Palma style rifles set up for F-Class competition. It was factory ammunition bought by the case and the same lot number strictly for competition. It was a Match chamber from a reamer that is the exact one specified for the Federal Match factory ammunition. I even sent them an unopened box for lab analysis. Never heard back from them.

Now, I was disappointed in Federal but they're a big establishment so who knows what happened. I just switched brass and went with my shooting. I still shoot Federal shotgun ammunition for the field.

You might want to look into IMI .223 brass since I and many others have found it to be well made, sturdy and reasonably priced. Lapua doesn't make their own .223 brass, it's outsourced and pretty poor quality for what they charge for it.

    Just my observations.

It's also been a topic of conversation and posts on the web regarding the fact that there are some runs of Federal brass that are soft. It is not the fault of the firearm in most cases. Federal has made good on some of the bad runs but not all. My bad run came, I think if I remember right, when there was a buy out of Ferderal confusing the issue of quality, that's why I let it go.

    Best.

Nonon, Thanks, I have come to the same desision, No more FEDERAL, the 308 Federal was Match also. I have about 800 Federal in 223 left, will load them once and toss them.

I think I will find their Web sight and BAD MOUTH THEM.[:0][:0][:0][V][V][V][:(!][:(!][:(!][:(][:(][:(]

You say you got it from someone, once fired.
Does that someone ever ream the flash holes or uniform the primer pockets?
Maybe it is the brass; but check all possibilities first.
Could also be that your primers are slightly undersized-I had a case of Rem 9 1/2M's that would literally fall out of the pockets of some new Winchester SuperX brass in 300WM. The CCI's were a tighter fit.

If you know it all; you must have been listening.<br>WEAR EAR PROTECTION!
