i have a chance to buy a winchester mdl 94 in 30WCF - DOM 1920, question is it has a buttstock with raised cheekpiece & a red hard rubber buttplate - is this a add on or was it offered like this at that time? thanks for any info

I suspect both the butt stock and butt pad have been replaced, but you need more of an expert than I to really answer.

Winchester did not offer a cheekpiece buttstock for the Model 94, and they are extremely rare on any lever action model (a very limited few Deluxe 1873s & 1876s were made with 3X cheekpiece stocks). The only commonly found Winchester of that era with a cheekpiece stock is the Model 1885 single-shot. With all of that said, IF somebody was REALLY persistent (and did not mind paying through the nose), Winchester would make just about anything a customer wanted. However, by 1920 Winchester was no longer in the habit of providing anything that was not listed as a special order option. My bet (99.98%) is that the stock on your Model 94 is somebody else's handi-work.
