I am interested in readers response to the idea of combining a Federal Motor Carrier,"trucking company" and an FFL holder.I own a trucking company and hold a FFL1.We own several trailers, one being designed to transport heavy metal cases with locking devices. The idea is to use the FFL1 as a transfer agent.I am aware of various state laws etc.I have worked with ATFE,NRA,an attorney and DOT to ensure that we are legal.I would like to hear from users of this forum about the use of this service.Transporting and shipping larger collections as we all know is a problem. We hope to find a market with collectors and estate moving....Thank you for your comments...

Aside from NFA items, I would think your FFL would let you move items from state to state. You probably couldn't use contract drivers - that is the driver should be an employee both of the trucking company and the firearm shop. Also the owner of the collection should be there to accept delivery in person. Naturally his items must be legal in his new state.

I'm no expert - this just sounds reasonable to me. Unfortunately in dealing with the ATF reason sometime has little to do with the matter!

I'll be interested in other responces since I hope to move from scenic IN to NV in a year or so and will face the same situation.

Why would you need a FFL to commercially transport firearms? Does FEDEX or UPS have a FFL? I know the USPS does not have a FFL. All 3 use contract delivery people as well as some of their own employees. If you own a trucking company and have a secure way to deliver firearms offer the service.

If you take possession of the guns as a FFL, wouldn't you need to enter them in your bound book and then do 4473s on all of 'em when the owner gets 'em back? I'd think a separate well insured/bonded business of moving big locked boxes from one place to another would be a better idea - of course, like the specialized car transport companies - "we take extra care of your stuff 'cause we have stuff just like it and realize how special/valuable it is to you..."

...Sounds like a great idea, but have you done the research into how "big" the market is for such a business?
Have you allowed/considered the fact that a non-01 holder can ship long guns via USPS...far more reasonably priced than the "other" carriers and IMO the safest best way to ship. Handguns can go USPS from an 01 holder....so it really is a niche market. Just how many "large collections" are shipped where a box truck, bob-tail or even a big rig is needed?

...I would think that for this to be a successfull endeavor, that MAJOR advertising would be the key to success, whatever the medium that might be used. Seems that proper business letters and face to face follow ups to/with the proper people would be a must for this to work.

...No expert on this subject either, but it seems this would be somewhat a niche market, ie; Auction Houses, Liquidaters, etc. and people that do not want the hassle of shipping themselves...though they would still have to pack/or drop off unless you offered a pik/pack up service also as an option.

......Contacting people that such a business/service exsists, is imperative...luck...[;)]

This sounds like a good idea, I have worked behind the scenes at a couple auction houses that have large militaria and firearm auctions, and getting the collection from it's location to the auction house presented problems. Particularly when it was a large estate or located out of the state of the auction house. It is for sure a niche market but a niche in demand. MHO target the large auction houses and museums that specialize in firearm and militaria collections. Best of luck!
