I have a new model 70 in a 25-06 the barrel should be free floated but when hot, I tried to run a business card under the barrel and was unable to. It got hung up at about three inches from the top heading towards the trigger. Is this normal or should I be able to slide the card further down? thanks, joe.

Try it with a $1 bill.

You did not mention which model 70 you have. Try it with a $$$ bill, and it should go all the way back to the action lug.

These last model 70's were thrown together at the factory, and there was not a lot of care taken when putting the barreled action into the stock. I have an Ultimate Shadow SS, in 25 WSSM. When I took it out of the stock to get the packing gunk off it, there was a chunk of bedding epoxy came out of the stock woth the action lug. The stock was injection molded, and when being assembled to the rifle, not all the mold release was gotten out of the action lug pocket. The epoxy had nothing to stick to, except the action lug.

So, yes pull it out of the stock if it can be free floated. Just a reminder, free floating is not a cure all for accurach. You need a solid launching platform too. Pillars on the fore, and aft action mounting bolts are the only way to go.
