45 GAP vs 45 Auto

I am considering a 45 for personal defense as I think it is better than a 9MM or a 40 S&W. To make a long story short, the guy at the store says the 45 GAP is the way to go, not the old 45 Auto because it will fit is a smaller framed gun and a smaller framed gun is lighter and easier to care. Thoughts??

The 45 Gap is a fantastic cartridge , unless you plan on buying ammo, shooting your gun, or buying componets for reloading (read:cases). People say that you shouldn't buy a 10MM because ammo is expensive and it is hard to find, the 45 GAP is even worse. Well as a way of an example let me see what I have in stock at my shop.

    45ACP: 9 brands, 4 bullet weights, plinker ammo ($17.99 for 50)to +P self defense ($19.99 for 25)

45 GAP: 1 brand, 1 bullet weight, only a high end self defense load ($29.00 for 25), Sold out 4 months ago and I haven't been able to get any more to re-stock the shelves

    10MM: 4 brands, 2 bullet weights, plinker ($22.00 for 50) to self defense ($22.00 for 20)

    40 S&W: 12 brands, 6 bullet weights, plinker ($14.00 for 50) to self defense ($19.00 for 25)

The "guy" at the store might think it is the best thing since sliced bread, but the truth is that only one manufacture is building a gun for it and unless you really want a Glock there is no other way to have the cartridge.

Joe, I still remember the day I sold Out of my original stock. A guy called us and asked if we had anything in .45 GAP. When we told him that we had some he became very excited and said he was on his way down. This guy drove straight up from Alpine (120 Mi one way) and bought every box we had in stock. I asked him if why he was buying it all, was it that great of a price? He said no, we were the only place in southern California he could find ammo!!! I have not seen another box since that day and I can not get a straight answer on when I will get any more in stock.

The .45 auto has been proven time and time again in a variety of different gun formats (i.e. 1911, revolver, tommy gun). Simply stated, it works for it's origional intention, that being a close quarters defensive round. I was told the same pitch lines when I bought my last/newest .45 (Glock 21 by personal preference). You cannot go wrong with the .45 auto. I hope this tidbit helps. Have a great weekend.

To the OP - Go with a 45 ACP and you'll never be sorry.

On the ammo question for 45 GAP, I did a search here and found

    $26 + shipping for 50 FMJ

    and

    $33 + shipping for 50 SXT

Of course there weren't a lot of boxes of either and that + shipping is liable to really boost the expense.
I used to recruit for the NRA until they sold us down the river (again!) in Heller v. DC. See my auctions (if any) under username henryreilly

I've got the 45 Gap, along with the 45 ACP. I like them both. I haven't had any problem with getting ammo, bought a case of federal not too long ago for a good price.

The gap hits differently in the hand, compared to the acp. You need to try one, if you get the chance.

    Doesn't Springfield still build a 1911 in 45GAP?

    I don't think so.
But they capitalized on the tooling for the short frames by bringing out the EMP 9mm.

My bad. But they DO offer an XD in 45 GAP.

So now you can have two guns, apparently, in that weird caliber. Which is why I predict we'll see the GAP go the way of the dodo bird. I mean two guns? That's it?
