Wood Stripper

I have an older Winchester .308, and I want to refinish the stock. It has some really nice intricate wood engraving on the stock that won't allow me to just sand down the entire stock. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good wood stripper that would take off the clear poly coat and stain from the engraved parts of the stock?

I have had very good success with a finish remover called "DADS" Finish
remover. Brush it on, leave sit for several minutes then wipe off. Use a tooth brush in checkering or carving. It says to use rubber gloves and it means it. Rather uncomfortable on skin.

Most of the strippers are baed on metylene chloride- get it on your skin, you will think you are on fire. You may want to try some Formby's Refinisher- solvent that dissolves finish- use steel wool to rub. Do be careful- flammable as all get out.

I've used a couple of brands from Lowes. I think the active ingreadents are pretty much the same. Don't forget to get a can of nutralizer to wipe off your work after stripping.
It's too late for me, save yourself.
