721 Remington

My son has a 721 that my Dad bought new in the 50's. The barrel bore has seen better days. My son wants to re-barrel it to 35 whelen. He had to repair the extractor several years ago. I was wondering if there is anything else that should be looked at prior to this modification? It will also be re-blued at that time. We will also refinish the stock. The stock is a custom walnut glass bedded unit. It was made 50 years ago by a stockmaker at that time. It is currntly chambered in 30-06. Thnaks for any advice![:)]

    heliman,

Based on the fact that this rifle is wearing a custom stock, it might behoove you to consider having the original barrel re-bored. In this manner, the original contour is preserved along with the island sight band and you will only have to do a bare minimum of stock work, most of which will depend on the quality of the original bedding. Once the re-bore is done, the barrel maker can cut a new neck and throat for the 35 Whelen chamber, keeping the whole process reasonably economical.

The measurement that is critical to the process is the muzzle diameter. It needs to be approximately 0.625" to 0.650" in diameter to allow a safe amount of barrel material to be left around the new diameters. I think that the Remington contour leaves about 0.650 at the muzzle of the M721 barrel so you should be O.K. but measure to be sure.

Not all of them had the rear site band (bulge).

    heliman,

It doesn't matter if it has the island sight band or not. The re-bore is still a very viable method of accomplishing your goals. Use the links I supplied and contact the owners of those businesses if you need more information.

You could have it re-barreled but it will be substantially more expensive than the re-bore if you use a good quality barrel maker. I suppose you could opt for the cheap end of the spectrum but it will be a real crap shoot as far as the barrel quality is concerned. They can't sell them cheap without skipping some steps.
