Hi I would need to see a picture or 2 but it sound like you have a little of both sometime in the past some body probably changed barrels and had the 1912 laying around and fitted it to the 03 action I have seen this type of thing a few times collectint the old stevens /savage rifles where the barrel had been changed or altered or was the wrong thing completly but was fitted and worked no parts bought just labor good money for the gunsmith from a parts salvage hope this helps a little.

sounds like a Savage 1909 with a Savage model 12 barrel screwed into the receiver. The Savage 1909 had a smooth forearm and a shotgun style metal butt plate (flat). The barrels on the 1909 and 1912 were almost the same. The model 12 had a fixed forarm.

I think PACT is right. Most of the OLDER guns have No Good barrels,so the owner screwed on a good barrel to keep using his favorite..I Just bought a 90 Winchester with a savage barrel..Kinda makes you fret a bit when you first see the thing..Luckily I have several old octagon barrels for 90s so will use the best or have one relined. At times they are found on auctions under "parts"..Good luck with your coversion..modoc
