308win is the same size as the 7.62x51 NATO
7.62x54R is the Russian WW2 bolt action round (and they still use it in their sniper rifles and 30cal class machine gun)
The R in a metric cartridge means Rimmed (FWIW Flanged is what the Brits call a rimmed cartridge)
7.62mm is the bore size 51mm is the case length

Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

Those are definitely different cartridges. The 7.62x51/.308 win is a rimless case. The 7.62x54R is as the R denotes, a rimmed case. They are not interchangable.

If your gun is the 1916 Spanish Mauser as sold by Samco/Federal Arms Corp, etc., it should be a .308. It may be marked in tiny print under the front end of the barrel. By all means, don't shoot it until you know the caliber for certain.

As said before these are different cartidges. The .308 has a samller case capacity than the "54". The 54 bullet is also larger in diameter, and the case is rimmed. Bullet, or barrell diameters can range from .309 to .310. I wouldn't shoot that through your Spanish mauser.
The 54 is also a much more powerful round than the .308. It's ballistics are similar to the 30-06 or 8mm mauser when properly loaded.
This cartidge would also serve well as short action carbine, but for some reason there is only one company that I am aware of that offers this as a chambering in their hunting line.
In any case, the 54 is a great round with out standing ballistics and power.
