buy the gun that fits your type of hunting and also sights well. anything from a .243 to a .300 ultra mag will handle anything we hunt in north america. i usually go for shot placement over caliber.why punish yourself if you don't have to. a well placed shot will alway's beat fps or energy.just remember that every gun will kill given the right placement.whatever you get practice often!shoot more ,miss less and have fun, clarkey

I like the .308 for whitetail but if I was going to pick just one rifle for varmits to whitetail, I believe I would probably go for the .257 Roberts.

Although i do not own one at present,i don't see how you can beat the 25-06 for all around use.Perfect for varmints to all but the largest game. You couldn't go wrong with a Remington 700 chambered in that caliber.

25-06!! If you want one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg get a Model 700ADL Synthetic. You have the most useful action made combined with a synthetic stock that you aren't afraid to ding up and accuracy second to none right out of the box! I have seen a bunch of these rifles and shot in a bunch for other people. I have not had a bad one yet and know of 3 in 7mmMag that will group 6/10" with the same load! Nothing done to them except the barrels were broken in when new. If I was going to get an affordable rifle today that would be my choice. GHD

Remington 700 in a 260 Remington, flat shooting, mild recoil, small enough for varmints, large enough for white tails

All you Pro's definitely have me looking for a 25-06. Have been considering a new rifle, prior to reading about 25-06's, thought I would go for a .243, now am in search of a Remington or Browning
    25-06.

The 25-06 is a great caliber. I would go with the 243 for myself. I just like short actions better than long actions. Personal preference.

Don't know anything about varmit shooting but deer hunting calibers I can talk about from experience. Used to shoot with two other guys who swore by their .243's. I shoot a 7mm Rem. Mag and took a lot of flack from those guys about "too much gun". Funny thing was, we never had to track the deer I shot, but had to look long hours for the ones they shot. Enough said.

I like a 30.06 Browning with a BOSS. Handles anything I need. Got a buddy with a .243 who is kick shy. He brings them down but that Browning drops them so they don't move. We had to chase a pig or two over the hill after that .243 went off although the shot placement was good. Oh well. Dead is dead.

Surprising!?! Only one vote for the .30-06 (Also my choice!). Afterall, it is the parent cartridge of the .25-06 and .270, and a direct ancestor of the .308 and the .243, and for a handloader is capable of doing just about anything the others will do, and much more in some areas like heavy bullets. As for the brand of rifle, Ruger, Remington, Winchester, Savage--all pretty good and capable of about the same performance. I would personally prefer a custom sporter based on the '98 Mauser action. Also, when considering a deer caliber--there are deer and there are deer. I'd rather have the '06 for Mule Deer (I know you said Whitetails, but you might want to hunt a Muley sometime), and the '06 loaded with a 110 gr. bullet makes a good varmint round.

For myself, have always used a .270 for deer and groudhogs, a Remington 760 Gamemaster in earlier years and a 700 BDL in later years. They are dead at a distance with the .270 for deer and groundhog when using the same rifle. Now days I just use a .22lr for groundhogs and other varmits.

Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.

.25-06 gets my vote. My brother loaded his for prarie dogs -- I think I hit one, all we could find was one small piece (kidney?). With the the heavier bullets he has gotten several large deer.

Recoil much move civilized than .30-06, although I do like my Garand,

My choice would be the 270 Winchester. It's my favorite deer gun. Works well up close or far away.

I,m gonna check in again on this thread! 25-06!!!!!!! The 243 and 6mm are not in it's league although I have killed a pile of animals with a 243, it's no 25-06!! As far as the mule deer go, "DS" (my personal name for my 25-06 and stands for "Devastation Supreme") has been fired at 2 mule deer, 1 at 350 yds. 120gr HornadyHP dead in its tracks with heart and lungs destroyed and anothe at 200 yds hit high in shoulder immobilized because of spinal disruption!!(thought you all would get a laugh out of the disruption bit) No tracking, just field dressing. Prairie dogs shot until you couldn't stand to see the little varmints run up to the dead one and go"de,de,de,de" and then you'd shoot that one too! Groundhogs from 50 to 600 yds receive their air mail invitation home courtesy of an 87gr Power-Loct or a 90 gr Win PEP! WHitetails from 50 to 300 yds no questions asked, no tracking just dead!! And then you ask if I wanted an all around gun what would it be. 25-06,25-06,25-06!! GHD P.S. The 25-06 is not the gun I carry around in the truck all the time but if I could only have one gun I guess it would be the grand and glorious 25-06!! Thank you Mr. Neidner!!
