Basic Shotgun Question

Hi All,
I am thinking of getting a shotgun that would do for hunting and home protection. I see that you can get ones that come with a longer barrel for hunting and a shorter one for home protection. For the hunting side, I am unclear if I can shoot slugs out of a smooth barrel, it looks like some slugs are only meant for rifled barrels? Am I completely mixed up on this?

Thanks as always,

Greasy

I'll start with the slugs. Unless it specifically says on the box for rifled barrels only, it should be ok to use in smooth choked barrels. The older forster type lead slugs were originally designed for smooth bores and work fine. If you find a Mossburg combo with a slug barrel and a medium length smooth bore with screw-in choke tubes, you will have all you need for about anything.
