What is the main differences between the COLT Pony, Pony Pocketlite (?), Mustang, and Government model?? I just missed out by a matter of seconds on on purchasing a COLT .380 at the Nashville Gunshow today, I 'think' it was a Gov't model,.....I'd like to know where I can find another. Thanks for any explanation on the differences.

The Government is a locked-breech, steel-frame "full-size" single action pistol. The Mustang is a much smaller steel-frame single action version. The Pony series is based on the Mustang, but is double action only.

The Pocketlite name is added when the frame is alloy.

To me, the Pony Pocketlite is the finest .380 there is. It is smaller and lighter than any other, and the locked breech reduces felt recoil to a significant degree. I carry a Government magazine as a spare for my Pony and thereby have an extra round in the spare magazine.

I prefer the DAO Pony to the single action Mustang, especially for pocket carry.

I also am looking for a Colt .380 for concealed carry. I think I would prefer the larger Government model. Any ideas about the going prices on one in decent condition in blue steel? I think they also made the government model in stainless but I'm not sure. Do you know what the one went for at the gun show? Thanks

Dano's experience is sure much different than mine with the Colt locked-breech .380s. I do not think that experience is typical.

If you are considering a gun as large as a Beretta .380, a Kel-Tec P11 is smaller, lighter and holds 11 rounds of a far more potent cartridge. It also costs less.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, the one I missed out on at the gunshow Sat was a s/s Gov't model .380 w/ blue plastic case and it sold for $475, it looked to be in mint/like new condition. Then when I went back today I found this guy w/ a COLT Mustang .380 that said he had turned it into COLT to be 'deburred inside and out' as he called it. He said he'd sell it for $600 w/ custom leather holster but I just got his # and said I'd think about it. That's a lot of money for that!!Besides, I just bought a new Light Weight COLT Commander .45 ACP and a new RUGER 10/22 w/ bull barrel and laminated stock.......so I was low on funds!!! Thanks again everybody and I'd still love to get a COLT .380 so please let me know if you hear of one!!

I own a Colt .380 pocketlite Gov't model and a Beretta 84f and to pick between the two would be a tuff call. They both have their advantages.

Reliability: toss up. Both have never jammed.
    Accuracy: Colt
    Capacity: Beretta
    Carry : Colt
    Takedown: Beretta

As you can see no clear winner. Although if push came to shove I would pick the Colt. The reason being it is the only gun I have ever carried that I actually forgot I was carrying. Its stainless, and Being a single stacker its easier to hide than the Beretta. But should you get a good deal on a Beretta grab it with both hands, you won't be sorry.

It's too bad that when you get a winner, (Colt Pocketlite), they quit producing them.

Colt Pocketlite is definitely a great personal carry if concealability
is primary concern. Compact, light, .380 calibre, and reliable.

Downside is they are getting harder to find and rather pricey.
