.222 distance

How far will a .222 Remington model 722 accurately shoot? I shot a groundhog last summer at approximately 300yds. Is that about the max? If not, how much farther could be expected with factory rounds?

My dad had a Seiko .222 and claimed he got a coyote at a quarter-mile.

Great little round. I almost got a Seiko .222 off my brother-in-law. He got it cheap and wasn't impressed with the little bitty hole when he shot a empty coke can with it.

I messed up -- told him to try a full can, and then showed him a shooters bible with the retail price of the rifle in it. Dumb move.

It didn't seem to drop any, I aimed at it's neck when it stood up, I shot and heard the thump. When I walked down to see it, it's chest cavity was blown open. Pretty good shot I thought. I can aim pretty well when I have a rest. I have a few blocks of wood and layed on my stomach to shoot that one. When I sighted it in, I was in the bullseye at 200yds, and I was aiming at the center. I didn't aim expecting it to drop.

I shot one chuck at 340 yards and a number of them over 300yards with a max loaded 22 hornet, set trigger, 12x scope and a GOOD rest. The .222 having a bit more steam should better that by 100 yards, given a good scope, set trigger, butt and forend rests. The cartridge should do it but the other factors become increasingly important over 200 yards. One steady long range position for light recoiling rifles is to sit with back against a tree,knees touching, forend resting on knees and padded butt over the shoulder against the tree. This reduces pulse effect on drift.
