Trouble getting sight off

I'm having a heck of a time trying to get the front sight of my Mini-14 off to install a barrel shroud. I tried tying the rifle upside- down to a support beam on my deck with the muzzle on a piece of pine and hammering the sight down with a piece of a 2 x 4, but no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions, or do I just have to really put my back into it? I'm really worried about damaging it by using too much force. B)

Thanks guys.

Did you remove the cross pin first??? I've never taken one off so can't tell you how much force to use but as it is a collar arrangement, it would seem a twisting force would be a better way. Good luck.

Yeah, I took the pin out first. Maybe I just need to wrap the barrel in leather and put it in a vice and then wrap the sight in leather and use a pair of vice grips and just pound the sh*t out of it (?)

Try placing some heat on the sight itself propane torch or some other device, do not get too hot just to where it will sizzle when spritzed with water, then use a no-mar hammer of some sort (lead or soft brass)to shock the sight forward, problem I encountered with these is the pin hole is drilled and plugged at assembly and there are burrs around the pin hole. good luck.
