.357 lever action

Hi,
Was out looking at shotguns this afternoon but saw a nice Marlin 1894CP, a .357 magnum lever action. I have a revolver of the same calibre and thought this might be a fun gun to go plinking with or take camping.
Anyone with experience of this gun? Is it fun to shoot or should I put the dollars to something else?

Thanks as always,
Greasy

I'm considering buying a .357 lever gun, and I'm looking at the Marlin & the Rossi. Can anybody tell me which is the better gun & why?

Very nice rifle. Had one for quite awhile, and enjoyed the ability to shoot .38's as well as .357s. I eventually sold it, as it dawned on me that a rifle should be more powerful. The .357 handgun/rifle combo was fun, but I could carry a more powerful rifle and still carry a .357 handgun; and the velocity difference between the .357 rifle vs. the .357 handgun was not the same ratio-wise as the .357 handgun vs. the more powerful rifle. Anyway--why not; if it sounds good to you go for it. I'm just presenting the point of view that one day you'll be standing out in the middle of the woods and saying to yourself, "Hey--I've got two .357s here, that's one too many; as one could be something else."

    Der Gebirgsjager,
Thanks for the sound advice, thats a point I need to think about.
What more powerful rifle would you recommend? I would be looking to carry this when camping and plinking. I was thinking perhaps .44mag then I could use it for hunting as well (pig and possibly deer).

    Thanks,

GM, have the 357 and it is really fun to shoot. recoil is very light and the rifle is short and handy. Makes an ideal small game gun, but light for deer. I have 357 pistols too but generally carry a 22 if I have the rifle along.

.44 is not a bad choice for your stated purposes--but there are so many choices out there that the options are almost unlimited. Not knowing where you live and what the hunting conditions are, I'd suggest asking local hunters what they use and what their level of satisfaction is. If you are new to the shooting game and like lever actions a .30-30 might be a good place to start. More powerful than the .357, but does not have excessive recoil; and the ammo can be inexpensive if you keep your eyes open for the periodic sale prices at the big chain stores. Again, let me stress that I'm not knocking the .357 Mag. carbine as a fun gun; and if you are really attracted to it you should try it out. But it is not a good choice for hunting for most folks, and if you're already carrying a .357 in a holster why not go for more power in the rifle?

I used the same reason, as you are, why not have both rifle and long gun in the same caliber. My selections are S&W 686 and Marlin 1894C, as stated above ammo is inexpensive and you can use .38 Special, recoil does not exist and it is very accurate at 100 yards. I have this setup for the last 10 years and never regret it. I agree it is not enough for the big game, but it is good enough for anything else.

A co-worker/shooting buddy of mine has one of these and it is an absolute dream to shoot. My only complaint is that he won't sell it to me!!

greasy: I have always wonder why people shoot deer all day long with 5 and 6 inch revolver and 10 and 12 inch T/C and then think they can't use a 20 inch rifle in 357 for deer, seems like you will pick up about 700 fps out of the rifle with the same load . I have a freind that uses a 357 rifle, pistol combo and he's drop many a deer with them, myself I like the marlin in 44 mag and have used it for deer hunting with good results,
on a side note if you think you may want a marlin in 44 give me a shout I can help you out
