Springfield Armory M1A

Besides an AR-15 heavy barrel ive been lookin at semi-auto .308's, and the best seems to be the M1A. If i were to purchase the basic standard rifle, what kind of accuracy could i expect with facotry match ammo (Federal and Hornady 168's) and a good (spelled Leupold) scope??? I dont have the extra dough for the top end models, so any help would be appreciated, or info on any other accurate .308 semis?

    Was wanting to purchase a rifle that would make a nice semi auto deer rifle as well as a battle rifle. Is the M1A a good choice? I could really use some feedback on versatility of the M1A. Thanks

    The only thing I'd really think about when wanting it for both hunting and a battle rifle is if you have to lug it through the woods a lot while hunting. If I"m in my tree stand I'd probaby use mine but if I'm having to push then I'd want something lighter. Most of the time I end up pushing I don't even get a chance for a shot so having the lighter rifle is a plus.

    green lantern hit it, if you have to carry it a long way, it's a heavy gun. From a stand or blind, it will get the hunting job done. I would put a third generation scope mount on it and a scope for hunting, and when you want a battle rifle, pull the scope and mount off as one.

    When in doubt...empty the magazine!!

    I have an M1A Bush Rifle thst is old and I love dearly.
    Killed many deer and hog.
    However,I am getting into FALs and they definitely deserve a look.

    The M1A, is a heavy rifle with the Walnut stock...get the synthetic stock, it's lighter...much lighter; as for recoil with the lighter synthetic stock...didn't know the 308 had recoil! About the only thing I don't like about a semi-auto for hunting...ejecting the empty cases but I do make an effort to find spent shell's...but in my particular case...I ONLY LOOK FOR ONE EMPTY..heheheheheheeeeee!

    The M1A is a proven battle rifle and the .308 round is excellent for taking deer (and hogs). As a battle rifle, the 7.62 (same as used in the M60 machine gun)will not only take down opposition forces but will also punch through cynderblock walls and other cover. For hunting use, use the 5 round mag to reduce weight. If hunting groups of hogs that are pest and destroying property, use a 10 or 20 round mag and seriously wound the first hog...disable it!..as the other hogs stay in to protect it, take them out. A friend of mine does this once or twice a year and gets 8 to 10 hogs then donates the pork to charity.

    If your wanting a M1a and you can afford it, get it. It is most definately something you will love, if you don't theres something wrong with you.
