Savage or CZ-550 cal 308win (7.62 Nato) both rifles are inexpensive and surplus ammo is readily available.

Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

If your realy strapped for $$, you might want to buy a mosin nagant. You can pick them up all over for less than $100, a real good one for $150 or so. Ammo is pretty cheap too, they are Russian surplus.

Go for the Savage model 110 FP. It comes with a 24"Heavy barrel in many cals including 300 win mag. That should do the trick for you. Only problem is that a really good long range quality scope will cost more than the rifle. Terrible quandry to be in , isn't it? But seriously, the Savage has a good reputation for out of the box accuracy. Don't skimp on the optics, buy the absolute best that you can afford and use good solid mounts( no weaver bases ). Leupold and Burris make excellent dual dovetail mounts that are as strong as you can get. Once mounted they stay put. Good luck..

The problem with Savage is the stock and the trigger. Both suck.

By the time you replace both of them, you could have a Rem 700VS and be ahead.

I bought a new savage 10FP .223 that I equipped with a 6-24 scope and bipod for under $600.00. My next next upgrade will be a new trigger. I have only shot this rifle out to 100 yds so far and all three shots can be placed inside a nickel at that range with regular PMC ammo. I am going to try some other types of ammo including federal gold match and work out to 200 yds. My Remington PSS cost more than my complete savage combo. The savage is a nice and accurate shooter out of the box and cost less than half of my equipped PSS.

You still don't define what you mean by 'long range' so I will assume you mean 500 to 1000 yards. If so, the caliber is .30-06 (what else could it be ). Either of the above will fit and I would add any flavor Remington 700 or Savage 110 or Winchester M70 or Browning A-bolt. All of the above may need trigger work and bedding or other accuracy tuning, depending on what you want in the accuracy dept.

BTW, a 'sniper' rifle is nothing more than a rifle used by a sniper. It could be anything! In my lexicon there are snipers and there are rifles but there is no such animal as a "sniper rifle". The gun-grabbers have been attempting for several years to classify scope mounted rifles as 'sniper rifles' in an effort to further erode the second amendment, don't fall into their trap by calling a rifle capable of long range accuracy a 'sniper rifle'.

Sniper???? What is a sniper rifle???? It seems to me that almost any rifle in the hands of someone who takes the time to get to know it, how it functions, and knows how to shoot, qualifies. If you are looking to shoot a 1600+ meters go big caliber 50BMG, anything 1000 or less just about any belted magnum will do. My advise is whatever you get, practice, practice, practice and then practice some more. You really should try being more specific as to what range you want to function at. 1,2,3,4,500 meters ect. ect.
