High Standard Derringer D-100

I recently purchased a .22 High Standard Derringer D-100 in excellent condition. I was wondering what type of .22 shells I should be using before trying it out. Would Winchester Super X 22 long rifle be OK?
Also, what does the term "dry firing" mean??? Any hints on maintenance or things to check before and after firing would be appreciated!!!

Thanks,
Steph

    To answer question no.1 yes winchester ammo will do fine.Try to shoot the same grain all the time such as 40GR or34GR,I prefer 40gr.Question no.2Dry firing is making certain way beyond a reasonable doubt your weapon is unloaded,always double check then check again.Then you point your weapon in a safe direction and pull the trigger as you would if you were really shooting.You will be surprised at how your body will flinch as you squeeze the trigger until the Hammer falls.Before you dry fire your weapon check your owners manuel or call the factory to make sure dry firing will not damage your firing pin.With practice you will quickly improve on your shooting.Assuming it is safe to dry fire your weapon have a friend go with you to the range,let him do all the loading.That way you wont know if your shooting live ammo or not,of course make sure he doesnt tell you if your loaded or not.You will see just how much tou jerk when you anticipate the weapon to fire and it doesnt.Dont be embarressed,Im a certified range instructor and I see guys from our DEPT.do this all the time.Keep doing this until you dont anticipate the weapon to fire and over a few sessions you will see improvement.The more you practice the better you will be.You will learn not to flinch and to concentrate on your target only.But first make sure it is safe to Dry fire your weapon,and when you do it inside make sure the gun and Mag are empty.Then when you go to the range tell your buddy not to tell you if you are shooting live ammo or not,but always assume you are.

    to answer your questions;
    #1. do not use 22 long rifle shells; these derringers are chambered for 22 Magnum only- 22 LR cases will split.
    #2. do not ( emphasize, NOT!) dry fire your rimfire derringer. You will succeed in damaging both the firing pin and the chamber.
    I have one of these little beauties; they work well and hit reasonably hard for such a small and flat package. Removing the plastic grip panels will make the derringer significantly flatter.

    Have to disagree with j2k22 on the chambering. If it is a D-100 it is definetly a 22LR. If D-101 or DM-101 it is 22 Mag. Dry-firing is simply firing the gun with no cartridge in it. DON'T dry fire a 22 rimfire without an empty case in it. The impact of the firing pin against the side of the chamber can/will cause a shot-peening effect on the chamber and cause broken or shortened firing pin. In either case you will end up with a paper-weight while you try to find repalcement parts for your gun.

    Steph,
    Agree with Punchie on yours being a .22LR only. Here's a good site to explain the different models and when they were manufactured. Go to: "High Standard Model Listings" and click on DERRINGER and it will explain all about them. I presently own 3 of these little beauties. Have fun with it.

    thanks Punchie- I wasn't aware that HS made them in .22 LR; never saw one. Looked at mine- no model number on it; just assumed that they were all magnums.

    A great little gun. It fits well in the front pocket of baggy pants. I carry one when I go downtown to watch the Braves.
