Another feature for the long barrels (7" & & 7 3/8") was a finely cut groove on each side under the front of the barrel, this was for optional "clamp on" barrel weights. Although rare, some were made of Aluminum and most were made of steel. These had three layers stacked on top of each other....the first layer clamped to the barrel, the second could slide back and forth to adjust the weight where needed, and the third could be removed altogether if it became a little heavy.
Later model 7" 41's did not have the vented muzzel brake and do not have the fine cut grooves for the clamp on barrel weights.
I have two 41's, and two sets of steel sliding barrel weights, they are very hard to find. The gun as you describe could be worth from $700-$1000 depending on accessories, papers, original boxes, etc.
Here are some parts diagrams that show some of the different accessories and barrel weights Smith offered....enjoy.... http://www.urban-armory.com/diagrams/sw41.htm
