Ruger Police Carbines

I am considering buying a pistol caliber semi-auto carbine, is the PC9 or 4 a good choice or should I choose something else? Please give your opinions.

    The Maine State police have these firearms and most officers I have talked to consider them garbage. The sights are terrible and they expect to see the firearms replaced shortly. Not sure what the replacement firearm will be yet.

    Why don't you consider the old favorite the m1 carbine. I think that they are some of the most fun guns to shoot. I have owned at least one since 1989 and they are great tuff little guns that you can shoot all day and they don't beat you to death.

    There are not many semi auto pistol caliber carbines out there. The main ones that come to mind are the Ruger PC series ~$350, the Marlin Camp series ~$350 and the Hi Point carbines at about $150. The Ruger comes in 9mm & 40 cal, the Marlin in 9mm & 45acp, the Kel-Tek Sub 2000 in 9mm ~$350 and the Hi Point in 9mm. Of the above three, I like the Ruger PC9. The sights on all of them can use improvement. I think the Ruger is a better built gun.

    H&K also makes a semi auto carbine in 45 acp, but that will set you back about $800

    Have you considered a conversion for your AR-15 type rifle? That is another option. Also, Mec Tech offers carbine conversions for Glocks and 1911 style pistols for $300, but , they require you having a gun to convert.

    The Ruger PC9,or .40 are great guns,of the two I would chose the 9MM because they except the P- series Mags.The 9mm mag is still availiable with after market 15rd magsup to 30rd.I think they are over priced.Gun Test magazine put it up against the Hi-Point arms 9mm carbine and gave the Hi-Point the best buy rating.I bought a Hi-Point and have found no fault with it whatsoever.It came with a muzzle Break a Beamshot Laser and tactical sling.And the company which is owned by MKS who gives the gun a lifetime warranty.The Polymer stock is ideal for combat situations,and it comes with a single stack 10RD Mag.

    I have a PC9 and I don't care for it, mainly it's the trigger pull - hard, long, and not smooth. It's rugged, though. I mounted a cheap scope on it, so I don't particularly mind the crappy iron sights. I like my Marlin Camp 9 better. Just my personal opinion.

    PS -- The PC9 uses Ruger or compatible 9mm mags, the Marlin uses S&W 5906 or compatible mags. Kel-Tec uses either Glock or S&W mags (one or the other from factory). Hi-Point uses their own. I have a 5906, so that is another reason I prefer the Marlin.
