AR-15 Safety Switch Spins Free

Just took delievery of a used AR-15. In shipping, the seller had to take the grip off to get the gun into his chosen box. I put the grip back on, which appears to include a spring which runs up into the safety switch somehow. But now I can't get the safety switch to set. If the gun isn't cocked, the switch spins like the broken free hand of a clock, or is it the other way around? In any case, my putting the spring in wrong, or whatever, appears to have the effect of making for no safety switch on my new acquisition. Maybe a part is missing, or I'm doing something wrong. Is there a web-site with a good cute-away and/or diagram of the relavent parts? Any advice? Thanks very much. greg

there is a spring and also a pointed plunger that goes in the hole. the grip holds this in to make the safety work. the spring and pin is the detent for the safety.

There should also be a plunger to go between the spring and the selector ... I've got a break down diagram somewhere, I'll find it, and post it ...

This is better than the original pic I posted ... this one is scanned from an old Bushmaster catalog ... assembly is the same on all AR-15 Types ...

If it is a Bushmaster go to there website and I believe they will send you a manual which has drawings of their AR-15.If that does not work give me your e-mail address(if you do mind doing that)and I will send you a drawing of a Bushmaster AR-15 from my manual but this will only work if you have a Bushmaster. There are a lot of smart postors on this website give it time and they will probably answer your question here.I have not took my ar-15 down yet so I cannot help you.

Hey RogerReloader. You got it. The seller must have dropped the "plunger" part while packing for shipping. I just saw the spring tapped to the grip with scotch tape when I opened the box.

But I found a "Safety Selector Detent w/Spring" at Fulton-Armory.com (http://www.fulton-armory.com/M16Parts2.htm) for $1.50. Sound right? The "Detent" must be the "plunger" you describe, right? And thanks a lot, by the way.

Here's the happy ending. Fulton-Armory.com delieved the new detent at a reasonable price in short order. Ordered it over the Internet. Works like a champ. Thanks, folks. greg
