AR-15 Trigger Job

I own a Colt AR-15 model 6601 and would like to do a trigger job (replace the trigger assembly). I need to lessen and smooth the pull. Gun is mainly used for plinking. What type trigger would you suggest, and can I do the job myself or will I need a gunsmith? Thanks

BROWNELL'S HAS SEVERAL DIFFERENT TRIGGERS AVAILABLE FOR THE AR, THE 'JEWEL' IS THE BEST BUT MOST EXPENSIVE. I'VE USED THE 'J-P' AND THEY WORK WELL WITH MIN. FITTING, IF YOU ARE ABLE TO TAKE THE AR APART {AND SUCCESSFULY PUT IT BACK TOGETHER) YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO INSTALL ONE YOURSELF.

MIKE WISKEY's right - there are many sellers of triggers to replace the stock AR's. I replaced mine (first-timer) with a 2-stage from Bushmaster (came with good instructions) in about twenty minutes. A do-it-yourself trigger job will cost you far more if 1.) you don't know what you're doing, 2.) you try it & do it badly, 3.) you manage it but then find it fires unpredictably, rendering it unsafe to operate. Check with your local 'smiths. If what's in there now is in decent shape, somebody who knows what they're doing - & charges accordingly - can probably smooth it for you for the cost of an inexpensive replacement drop-in (or less). If you opt for a replacement be aware that Colt's pivot pins are different than almost everbody else's. You need to make sure you buy a trigger set that's specifically made for a Colt.

I put in a JP single stage. It took a while but was worth it. The Jewel double stage triggers can be set a little lighter which is nice
for fine target work but I personally like single stage for plinking and rapid fire.
These triggers are not drop in replacements and may require a little delicate metal removal on the trigger to adjust it to 3-3 1/2# and have the safety work properly. If you're not good at this stuff let a gunsmith do it.
