WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST 30.06 THAT IS PRICED AROUND $400. I WANT A BOLT ACTION AND IT WILL BE BOUGHT AT A BASS PR SHOP OR A LOCAL GUN SHOP.

    Well in that price range you have a choice of either a Savage or a Ruger. I would take the Ruger because of the mauser type action with claw extractor.

    You could aslo pick up one of the Remington 710's for about $350 and it comes with a cheap scope.

    Ditto the Ruger/Savage recommendation. The Savages have a fine reputation for accuracy, which is derived from a much closer inspection of, and attention to, headspacing. I read an article which stated that they are probably one of the most scrutinizing companies as far as rifles leaving with tight spec'd headspacing. The rugers are very nicely finished rifles as well, so go hold them both and see how they "come up" for you, at the gunshop, and buy accordingly. Then you may want to check the Gunbroker auctions, you may be able to win yourself a higher quality model from either company for the money you wish to spend, compared to the same expenditure at the gunshop.

    A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.

    For the monet you mentioned,Hands down the Savage Package comes with a mounted,Boresited 3x9 scope leather sling swivels etc.And they are a proven rifle in the best to the most extreme conditions.And very accurate. Hope this helps!

    I've had a Savage since they cost $259.00 at Wal Mart. It is accurate and dependable. Mounted a scope that cost 2/3 the rifle and don't think I could have a better meat gun.

    Have you looked on Gunbroker? I just took a quick look and there are various Remington 700's for sale ranging from $201 (used) to $399 (new). I doubt you could find a better rifle than the M700 for that price (and no, I'm not selling any of them).

    I have a Savage mod 10, Tactical, with a 24 inch bull
    barrel; Wouldnt trade it for two of anything else.

    Hey Ted, if don't mind looking used, the Husquvarna rifles are awsome. I have a 243 and a 30-06. They have Mauser actions, and my 30-06 has a 24" barrel and cost $280.00 and is in great shape. I picked it up at a local skop where it came in on trade. Heck, it even has a Timmney triger. But if you want new, for the money, the Savage guns are hard to beat.

    I have a friend who also swears by Savage, but they just don't
    feel good to me. Somethin bout the materials in and around the
    bolt just don't make me happy. I understand they are accurate
    and cheap, though.
    I bought a Rem. 710 a few months back and it is pretty nice. They
    have changed a lot of the traditional methods of manufacturing
    a bolt action rifle. It is supposed to be stronger than the
    traditional methods. But of course, "they" are going to tell us
    that, aren't they.
    Anyway, I like it and the scope is a "sharpshooter" which is what my
    dad has hunted with on his 7600 for years.

    In that price range you can't go wrong with the Savage 110, one of the best bargains around.
