Muzzeloader Scope

What is a decent scope for the T/C Encore .50 cal without breaking the bank? I am told the energy from the rifle would tear up a lesser scope. I would like to budget for under $300.

T/C recommends 80 gr of FFg with a .50 sabot for the Encore. This would not produce a particularly high amount of energy. Any large caliber rifle scope could easily withstand the kick of the Encore. Now, I am not sure whether this barrel is drilled and tapped. Some scopes in Cabela's catalog are called "black powder" scopes because they must set farther away from the eye than normal and need more eye relief. Simmons and the Cabela's line both make scopes that ought to be fine for under $100.

I am thinking about the ATN 3x9x55 Pro Rifle Scope posted here for $279. Would this be a good/fair choice? I understand that it is a 30mm tube. Does this play a factor?

I have a Tasco 2-7 mounted on a Mauser sporter from the Oberndorf Germany works, in 30-06. Blasphemy, a $75 scope on a $400 rifle. I have carried this on 30 deer hunts a year for ten years, make it 300 hunts or more. Carried in rain, slung around in a pickup, dinged against the tree stand while being raised on the rope. It has never failed and the last deer I got was at 194 paces, right through the heart. That is a very long shot in Ga., I know that is nothing if you are in Colorado. The 30-06 produces twice the kick of the T/C black powder. Yeah, I would like to have a Leupold. I have seen scopes in Cabela's, what are they, Swarovski or something, seems like they were $800. I bet they are very nice. We all do with what we can.

Guys, don't misinterpret my signature as a quote directly related to this thread, it's on all my posts.

hawkflyer, I am not sure what ATN stands for in your question. Is ATN the name of the manufacturer? Yes 30mm does play a role in late shooting ability, as does the 55mm objective. The lens quality does also, and that is mostly what you are paying for. I can tell you this, a hunting buddy of mine put a Simmons Aetec w/ the illuminated reticle on his T/C encore, and dropped one at 187yds with 100gr of pyrodex last fall. It was time to leave the stand and he still was able to make the shot under those conditions of darkness. I have never felt that I would own a Simmons, but after using the Aetec, I must admit that it is clear and durable. I purchased one for a rifle I have which is, shall we say, not a 1000yd gun. Enough optics for what it is sitting on. anyway, take a look at those on www.natchezss.com. They are less than $200 for the 3-12x44 model, and are plenty for ANY black powder rifle going.
what is the auction number for the ATN? I don't know about them but would like to take a look and see what it's all about.

Also take a look at Nikon Buckmasters series as well.

I will echo JustC, as he and I tend to see eye to eye on scopes (no pun intended). Another place to look at nice scopes at good prices is www.bearbasin.com They have given me good quality and service over several years and several scopes.

First, I would like to thank all of you for your input. This is the first time I have used the forum and found it to be very helpful. There are lots of these ATN scopes on the auction block. They are illuminated reticle scopes for low light. Take a look at auction number 4915565. I have never heard of them prior to "gunbroker", but they look promising. I spoke to one seller and he, of course, gave them high praise. I shoot my Encore with 100 gr Pyrodex(2-50 gr Tabs). and a non sabot .50 pre lubed. The Encore is pre drilled and tapped for east mounting. I am planing to use see-thru mounts from http://www.ironsighter.com/mounts3.html that mount while still using the fiberoptic encore sights. This is the plan anyway. Would like to be set for this season. Thanks.

hawkflyer, just as a test, try the Barnes MZ hollowpoints, they are all copper and look like a flying ashtray. Knight labels them different and calls them "Redhots", but they are the exact same bullet. Very accurate, and they expand just like the picture. I would be very suprised to see your T/C NOT put them in 1" or better at 100yds. Just thought I would pass that along.

One of the older Weaver 1X3 shotgun scopes or a Leupold 1X4 are both within that budget frame. Both good scopes. Had both of them on some very severe recoiling rifles. 1X3 on a 450 Ackley and the 1X4 on my 500 AHR at one time. Only reason it is no longer on the 500 is because I went with the 1.5X5 Leupold and put the 1X4 on a Marlin 45-70.

Ditto on those Barnes Red Hots. Truly an awesome bullet. They shot much, much better in my Encore than any conical lead bullet. Try them you'll see. Just C is right on the money , again!
