Do any of you know how to tell what kind of grips came on a pre-WWII Colt Commercial Government Model? I've seen descriptions that count the rows of checkering between the diamonds and have been told they were walnut with double diamonds and no medallion. Come on-someone must have a pre war govt with original grips they could look at and tell me. Pleeeeease!

Here is a excellent picture of a 1911, with the original "Double Diamond" grips. If this doesn't answer your question, the links are to excellent on-line 1911/1911A1 Web-Sites, where I'm sure you will be able to obtain the information your looking for.

Colt used the walnut grips pictured above (rufe-snow's post) on their commercial models though 1922. In 1923 they changed to checkered walnut with 28 (plus or minus 1) rows between the grip screw holes (no large diamonds). They had no medallion's. They were changed again in 1948 to the Coltwood grips.

A picture is worth a thousand words.
Those are the grips your gun should have come with in WW1 era.

I measured it and cut it twice, and it's still too short!
