Couple of shotgun questions

A friend of mine inherited two rifles and two shotguns from his grandfather and brought them by to let me check them out for him. I helped him by cleaning them up and the two rifles were in good working order after I carded all the rust off them. They had been in a closet for several years. Luckily there was very little pitting. I guess the oil and powder residue from never being cleaned helped protect them.
The shotguns are what concern me.
One is a Westernfield M172A 12 ga 2 3/4 & 3" bolt action with a select choke. It has a rear sight like it was made to be a slug gun, but was built with a poly-choke. Seems to be in great shape except for the end cap is lost off the poly-choke. If I can find an end cap for the poly-choke, it seems this would be all right to use. But I remember reading a few months ago about some bolt action shotguns that were not safe and were being recalled and bought back. Is this one of them or a good gun to use? Also, I could not find a serial number anywhere on the gun and I completely disassembled it when I cleaned it. Where would it be and how did I miss it?
The other is an old 16 ga SxS with a broken stock. The only things I can find on it are "American Gun Co." "New York" on the left side plate on the receiver and "genuine armory steel choke bore" on the left barrel.Other than that, the only other matks are the serial number stamped on the barrels, receiver and forestock which all match. I know most of these old shotguns aren't worth much, but if anyone has any info on the New York Gun Co. I would appreciate it.

As to the repair of the piece, even for the want of a simple part, I'd probably decline. The gun is at the absolute bottom of the barrel when it comes to value. It's just not worth much time or effort.
