Looking for a Restorer of Winchesters

Hi all,

I have a model "94 antique" saddle ring manufactured in 1964 that needs the case hardening redone on the receiver. I am having trouble finding a qualified gunsmith to do the work. I had kept the website of a company specializing in Winchester Restoration(www.winchester-restorations.com) but it is no longer active. I could use any help you may have to offer. I live in North Carolina, but am not opposed to shipping the gun to have it restored. Please email me at davemac001@aol.com if you can be of help.

    You can use one of several good search engines and locate the few good color case specialists. However, here are two to get you started.

    Look under the "Gunsmithing Services" catagory. I do not know their quality but you can run a check on them by asking for a client list for satisfaction.

    Doug Turnbull is the self proclaimed 'best in the nation' for color case work and restoration. He is nationally recognized for the quality of his work and he will tell you so. He is probably the one to recommend but his ego keeps getting in my way. Call him to discuss your project. If you don't like his price, ask him to refer you to someone else...

    Turnbull is the best in the business when it comes to color case hardening, but his prices and attitude do reflect that fact (as nononsense mentioned).

    I really don't think that your project is worth the expense.

    Your rifle is worth only $200 as it is. There's little point in spending $500-1,000 to give it a face-lift; it will still only be worth $200.

    Doug Turnbull typically does his magic on guns worth thousands of dollars. Now, if you ever get a Winchester Model 1873 "one of one hundred", & it needs work, that's a different story......

    Dave,

    I second Neal on this ... even a small local company that provides refinishing work will charge you more than the rifle is worth. And if this rifle has "special" memories for you those memories are probably tied to the guns present condition, so as it is now it serves to recall that event or those events that have contribuited to its' condition.

    As long as the mechanical function is good, keep it as is and enjoy it!
